We, the Kano Youth Wing of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, write with a heavy heart to register our disappointment and concern over the alleged discrimination against a qualified person with visual impairment, Mr. Yusuf Adam Muhammad, during a recruitment exercise conducted by D-Light Solar Energy in Kano.

Mr. Yusuf Adam Muhammad successfully participated in and passed all the required screening exercises for the position of Solar Retailer. However, despite meeting the recruitment requirements, he was allegedly denied employment because of his visual impairment.

According to the information available to us, on Thursday 25 June 2026, Mr. Yusuf Adam Muhammad was made to wait from 8:00 a.m. until about 8:00 p.m. in their office  before he was given a token of ₦1,000 for transportation by Mrs. Mansura Isa, who is  their Area Business Manager  and asked him to return home with the promise that he would be contacted later. He was subsequently not offered the employment opportunity, despite the fact that He reported about his disability condition during the virtual interview.

This action, if confirmed, amounts to discrimination on the basis of disability and is contrary to the provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which guarantees equal opportunities for persons with disabilities and promotes their inclusion in employment. The Act stated that atlisst 5 percent of the employment opportunities should be allocated to persons with disabilities in both public and private institutions.

Similarly a cuttersy  visits letter sent to the Aspira Nigeria Ltd was rejected, claiming that not entertain disability related matters.

We are deeply concerned that such treatments continues to create barriers for qualified persons with disabilities who are capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

We therefore call on the relevant authorities, including the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities , civil society organizations, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders, to investigate this matter thoroughly and ensure that appropriate action is taken in accordance with the law.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, 25 June 2026, in Kano State.

We remain committed to advocating for equal opportunities, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

Signed:

Comrade Hamza Aminu Fagge
Youth Leader
Nigeria Association of the Blind, Kano Youth Wing
