The management of Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education Kano has announced an immediate ban on the Academic Staff Union (ASU), declaring the body illegal within the institution.

This decision was contained in an internal memo issued by the Registrar, Malam Sani Danladi Abubakar, following the university’s 5th Regular Governing Council Meeting held on April 16, 2026.

According to the memo dated April 17, 2026, the Governing Council said the action was taken to prevent the existence of parallel union structures and activities within the university. The council stated that ASU is not a duly recognized union under the university framework and lacks proper registration as a trade union under applicable laws, thereby making its operations unlawful within the institution.

The university further directed all staff members to immediately desist from participating in, promoting, or associating with the activities of the banned union. It warned that any staff found violating the directive would face disciplinary measures in line with the university regulations and the Public Service Rules.

In addition, the institution mandated recognized interim unions such as COEASU and SSUCOEN to begin the necessary transition processes to align with nationally recognized bodies, including ASUU and SSANU. The management said this move is aimed at ensuring compliance with national regulations governing staff unionism in tertiary institutions and maintaining order within the university community.
