Muhammad Sani Abacha, also referred to as Mohammed Sani Abacha in some media reports, is the son of the late General Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s former military head of state.
His name has once again come to the forefront of Kano politics after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed him as its candidate for the Kano State governorship election in 2027.
HIS POLITICAL HISTORY IN KANO
Muhammad Sani Abacha is not a new figure in Kano’s governorship politics.
In 2011, he contested the Kano State governorship election under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
In 2019, he again sought the Kano governorship, this time under the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA).
In 2023, he joined the PDP and secured the party’s ticket to contest the Kano governorship election.
His emergence as the PDP candidate for 2027 therefore represents another attempt by him to seek the governorship of Kano State.
HOW HE EMERGED AS PDP CANDIDATE FOR 2027
In May 2026, the PDP conducted its initial governorship primary to select its candidate for Kano State.
Muhammad Bello Dalha won that primary with 2,233 votes, while Muhammad Sani Abacha received 749 votes.
However, Bello Dalha later withdrew from the race following consultations involving stakeholders within the party.
Following his withdrawal, the PDP conducted a fresh process to replace its governorship candidate on 16 September 2026.
At the replacement primary, Muhammad Sani Abacha emerged with the party’s ticket and was declared the PDP governorship candidate for Kano State in the 2027 election.
THE RECONCILIATION PROCESS WITHIN PDP
The restructuring of the PDP ticket also affected the position of deputy governorship candidate.
The party announced Yusuf Ado Kibiya, a former commissioner and former leader of a faction of the PDP in Kano, as Abacha’s running mate.
Reports from the party linked the arrangement to efforts to reconcile different groups within the Kano PDP and strengthen internal unity ahead of the 2027 election.
WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND
An important point is that Abacha did not obtain the PDP’s 2027 ticket by winning the party’s initial primary in May.
Muhammad Bello Dalha won that primary.
Abacha became the party’s candidate after Dalha withdrew and the PDP subsequently conducted a replacement process.
That process resulted in Abacha’s emergence as the PDP governorship candidate for Kano State in 2027.

Muhammad Sani Abacha is a Kano politician and the son of the late General Sani Abacha.
He contested the Kano governorship in 2011 under the CPC, in 2019 under the APDA, and in 2023 under the PDP.
In 2026, he again sought the PDP governorship ticket. Muhammad Bello Dalha initially won the party’s primary, but after Dalha’s withdrawal, the PDP conducted a replacement process.
Muhammad Sani Abacha subsequently emerged as the PDP candidate for the 2027 Kano State governorship election.
Yusuf Ado Kibiya was announced as his running mate.
His emergence places him once again at the centre of the political contest for the Kano State governorship ahead of the 2027 election.
