A Professor of Mass Communication from the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano, Professor Ruqayya Yusuf Aliyu, has urged the Nigeria Union of Journalists to review the Code of Ethics for Nigerian Journalists.
Prof Ruqayya stated this during a one-day capacity building workshop organized by the Kano Online Media Chapel for online journalists in Kano.
Ruqayya Aliyu, who is the Head of the Department of Media and Information Studies at the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano, said that with the surge of AI, it has become an important tool for online journalists to utilize and make their work easier.
She noted that it is very important to utilize AI for their work, but it should not be used as a tool that is not expected to make mistakes.
According to her, AI tools make mistakes because they were created by human beings.
She also called for the review of the Nigerian Journalists’ Code of Ethics by the Nigeria Union of Journalists to align with the new trend of online journalism.
She further advised online journalists to ensure they attribute their sources of information before publication and avoid plagiarism.
According to Prof. Ruqayya, who was a practicing journalist before going into academics, integrity and the house style of media organizations are very significant in information dissemination.
She added that attributing sources and avoiding plagiarism uphold the integrity of journalists and their media houses; therefore, online journalists should make sure they abide by professional standards.
