In a significant step toward enhancing environmental sanitation and public health, the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has commenced the distribution of dust bins to commercial tricycle (Adaidaita Sahu) operators across the state.

The initiative is aimed at curbing indiscriminate refuse disposal on major roads and public spaces, thereby promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
The official flag-off ceremony took place today at the REMASAB Headquarters.

The Managing Director of REMASAB, Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil, reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s unwavering commitment to environmental cleanliness and effective waste management.

Dr. Khalil explained that the distribution of dust bins forms part of a broader strategy to ensure proper waste collection and disposal, particularly among commercial transport operators who play a critical role in daily urban mobility.

He further disclosed that REMASAB will collaborate closely with tricycle operators’ unions and the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) to ensure compliance and sustain the gains of the initiative.

According to him, the dust bins have been strategically positioned along major roads to enable tricycle operators to conveniently dispose of waste when their onboard bins are full. He expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly reduce littering and contribute to an improved quality of life for residents of Kano State.

The bins will be handed over to the various Adaidaita Sahu Associations for onward distribution to their members. Dr. Khalil emphasized that this collaborative approach is expected to encourage responsible waste management practices and foster a culture of environmental responsibility among tricycle operators.

In his remarks, the Deputy Managing Director of KAROTA, Shu’aibu Lawal Aranposu, announced a two-week grace period for tricycle operators to acquire and begin using the dust bins. He warned that upon the expiration of the grace period, KAROTA would commence enforcement actions against operators who fail to comply with the new directive. Our goal is to create a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents of Kano State, Aranposu stated. We will ensure that these waste bins are properly utilized to reduce refuse on our streets.

Speaking at the event, Nazifi B. K. Gidan Kudi, Chairman of the Tricycle Operators’ Voice Association, (VOTORA) commended REMASAB for the initiative, describing it as a critical step toward achieving cleaner streets. He assured the public of the association’s full commitment to the program and pledged to ensure total compliance among its members.

Dr. Khalil said, this initiative is timely and beneficial. We are fully committed to ensuring that every tricycle operator acquires and properly uses the waste bins.

The initiative, implemented through the collaboration of REMASAB, tricycle operators’ unions, and KAROTA, underscores the Kano State Government’s continued efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and safeguard public health across the state.
