Dear His Excellency Sir,
I’m a concerned Kano citizen writing to bring to your attention the deplorable state of environmental cleanliness in our dear state.
As you may be aware, our state is the most densely populated in Nigeria,and this density has taken a toll on our environment. The streets are littered with waste,and the stench is becoming unbearable resulting in an enormous impact on our health and wellness.
I urge His Excellency to beam his searchlights on the activities of the agency responsible for keeping our state clean. It’s obvious that they’re not doing enough, and it’s time for accountability and change.I suggest that you replace the current leadership wwith competent hands who will take the issue of environmental cleanliness seriously.
I also recommend that you embark on a secret tour of the city’s townships to see things for yourself.This will give you a firsthand experience of the situation and help you understand the unfortunate and pervasive issue that requires urgent attention.
Consequences:
– high increase in malaria, typhoid, cholera and exedous of sick people to our hospitals resulting in financial burdens in health care to the government and individuals.
– drive away potential investors from coming to Kano. The entire society is affected by the shame and tragedy;making us downcast and insecure as a result.
To mitigate this situation, I suggest the following:
– Declare a state of emergency in cleaning Kano State as a matter of urgency.
– Decentralize the agency’s work into clusters, with each cluster responsible for a specific area. This will make it easier to monitor and evaluate their performance.
– Engage unemployed youths in their own area of the clusters for the cleaning process. This will not only provide them with a source of income but also give them a sense of ownership and responsibility.
– Engage People with Disabilities (PWDs) that are roaming the streets for begging, from streets beggers to streets cleaners in the designated areas. This will promote inclusivity and give them an opportunity to earn and contribute to the society.
– Engage prison inmates on a daily basis to clean and clearing up the streets or government premises.This will not only help in keeping the environment clean but also provide them with a sense of purpose and rehabilitation.
– Provide incentives for those involved in the cleaning process. This could be in the form of monetary rewards,recognition, pardon to the inmates or even educational scholarships.
– Organize special Abba Gida Gida clean-up exercises involving the same women (as the JAKADUN-ABBA-GIDA-GIDA) that His Excellency is empowering monthly in their respective community, schools, and primary health care centers. This will create awareness and promote a sense of community ownership.
– Collaborate with private organizations to provide equipment and resources for the cleaning process.
– Establish a special waste management system research and tasks force unit that works, enforce and ensure that waste is disposed properly, cleared completely and disinfection in the specified disignated cluster centers in the state.
– Establish mini outfits on “Waste to Wealth” for recycling business.
– Bring in serious, competent private investors in waste management, public private partnership -PPP set up.
I hope these suggestions are helpful, Your Excellency. I’m confident that with your leadership and commitment,we can make our state a cleaner and healthier place to live.
