Your Excellency,
With sincere respect and a sense of civic responsibility, I write regarding recent developments that have stirred public concern within our religious landscape. Most notably, the peaceful protest held today, 24th September 2025, by the group Masoya Annabi and other concerned youths, highlights growing unease surrounding the preaching activities of Mallam Lawan Shu’aibu, also known as Lawan Triumph.
We are grateful for Your Excellency’s gracious reception of the protesters earlier today, and your willingness to listen to their concerns reflects your continued commitment to dialogue, peace, and accountability in public leadership. This alone has sent a strong message to the people of Kano that peaceful civic engagement is both welcomed and protected under your administration.
Kano is not only a center of trade and politics it is a legacy and symbolic heartland of Islamic learning and spiritual leadership in West Africa. The city has historically provided space for diverse Islamic traditions to coexist Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya, Izala, Salafiyya, Sanusiyya, among others each with unique perspectives, but united under the banner of Islam and mutual respect.
However, recent trends indicate that this fragile harmony is increasingly under pressure.
Over the last two years, many citizens especially from the Darika tradition have expressed discomfort with the tone and content of some of Mallam Lawan Triumph’s sermons. While we fully acknowledge his constitutional right to preach based on his understanding of Islam, multiple messages widely circulated on social media have sparked concern over possible misrepresentation, sectarian commentary, and inflammatory framing of sensitive theological matters.
It is important to emphasize that a formal petition was submitted to the Nigerian Police Force regarding these concerns, prompting a cautionary engagement with Mallam Lawan Triumph. However, despite this official intervention, the issue remains unresolved, with rising public anxiety about the potential for further tension.
These concerns were most recently reflected in the peaceful protest staged today driven not by political motives, but by a desire for clarity, fairness, and religious harmony.
Your Excellency, the memory of the Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara case remains fresh in the minds of many. The widespread controversy that followed his interpretations of Hadith, the numerous petitions submitted, the public debates, and the eventual legal proceedings collectively serve as a lesson on the importance of early, balanced, and transparent intervention.
Whether one agreed or disagreed with his perspectives, the way in which the matter unfolded led to deep polarization, institutional strain, and public unrest. We are concerned that a similar pattern could emerge if matters like those surrounding Mallam Lawan Triumph are not addressed through constructive and inclusive dialogue.
Furthermore, the recent public disagreement between Islamic singers Mai Dubun Isa and Tajil Izzi, though informal underscores the growing theological tension in the public sphere. Their exchange, followed and discussed widely across social media, signals a broader unease in the religious discourse, and a critical need for calm, unity, and guided mediation across all Islamic platforms whether scholarly or artistic.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In view of the above, we respectfully present the following for Your Excellency’s kind consideration:
1. Establish a Neutral Committee for Religious Dialogue:
Create a platform for impartial dialogue involving Islamic scholars, sect leaders, and community representatives to address concerns regarding preaching content and inter-sect relations. This effort should be supervised by a trusted and inclusive committee, avoiding bias toward any particular group.
2. Review Institutional Oversight and Responsiveness:
We urge a constructive performance review of the leadership of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with the goal of enhancing coordination, community responsiveness, and early conflict detection not as a punitive action, but as a means of institutional reform.
3. Strengthen Capacity of Religious Institutions:
Support capacity-building within the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Hisbah Board, and the Sharia Commission through training in mediation, crisis response, and inter-sect engagement. These institutions should be better positioned to engage early before disputes escalate.
4. Promote Ethical Preaching and Mutual Respect:
Encourage all preachers, scholars, and public religious figures including artists to embrace respectful language in their public addresses, avoid sectarian rhetoric, and promote peaceful coexistence in line with Islamic values.
5. Launch Public Sensitization Campaigns:
Initiate educational campaigns through radio, TV, mosques, and social media, promoting Islamic unity, tolerance for diverse interpretations, and the importance of responsible speech among preachers and followers alike.
Final Words
Your Excellency, this letter is not a call for censorship, nor is it an attack on any individual or sect. It is, instead, a respectful appeal for responsible leadership, proactive engagement, and institutional accountability in preserving the religious stability of our state.
We commend your administration for creating space for peaceful protest and public discourse, and we trust in your continued commitment to ensuring that Kano remains a beacon of Islamic scholarship, tolerance, and spiritual leadership for generations to come.
May Allah (SWT) continue to guide your leadership with wisdom, fairness, and compassion.
Yours faithfully,
