“No doubt, Kano deserve better” Bitter truth

Cc: DG Bashir Muzakkar (KASITDA), Public Complaints & Anti-Corruption Commission, Hon. Yusuf Kofarmata (Commissioner, Science, Technology & Innovation)

For almost two decades, Kano State tertiary institutions — polytechnics, colleges, and even universities — have been running their own application and registration portals. These systems were built and managed by their ICT departments, sometimes with the help of local consultants, and hosted on their own servers.

Now, under the current directive from the Office of the Deputy Governor, all institutions are being forced to abandon their portals and migrate to an external platform called SAFAPPLY (which is being claimed as coming from Dubai and Lagos).

On this platform:

Applicants’ data is collected in a private company’s database outside institutional control.

Applicants’ payments are directed to an external company account instead of the institutions’ accounts.

Why this is dangerous and backward:

1. Institutional Autonomy Destroyed – Every school already has ICT staff and working portals. Why render them useless?

2. Data Privacy at Risk – Sensitive applicant records now sit with a private company, not the institutions.

3. Financial Transparency Compromised – Funds are no longer handled by the institutions. Even if not corruption, isn’t this a big red flag? The Public Complaints & Anti-Corruption Commission must investigate.

4. KASITDA Silent – The Kano State Information Technology Development Agency was created to strengthen ICT capacity. Why allow schools’ ICT systems to be sidelined?

5. Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation – Hon. Yusuf Kofarmata, sir, are you aware of this? If institutions cannot use their own ICT platforms, are we not sending a message that ICT is not important in Kano?

Your Excellency, Kano’s education system should be protected, not politicized. Forcing institutions to hand over their ICT backbone to SAFAPPLY (Dubai/Lagos) is moving backward, not forward.

👉 What Kano needs is:

Empowerment of institutional ICT units.

KASITDA to set standards and provide technical oversight, not replace school portals with external companies.

Transparency in how applicant data and payments are managed.

We call on you to urgently review this SAFAPPLY arrangement, restore autonomy to our institutions, and show that Kano State values ICT and innovation in education.

Kano deserves better. Our institutions deserve better. Our students deserve better.
