The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, today publicly destroyed 12,233.946 kilograms (approximately 12.234 tonnes) of assorted illicit narcotics and psychotropic substances intercepted and forfeited through sustained intelligence‑led operations across Kano State and at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.
Led by Commander CN Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, the exercise marks a major milestone in the Agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) and demonstrates NDLEA’s resolve to intercept, investigate, prosecute and permanently remove dangerous substances from circulation.

The seized consignments resulted from intelligence‑led operations, targeted raids and sustained enforcement across the State, including Operations Sharar Mafaka and Ramadan Mubarak. Investigations exposed sophisticated concealments — including tunnels and caves in the Rimin Kebe area — underscoring the lengths traffickers will go to evade detection and the need for coordinated action to eliminate their hideouts.
Since January 2026, the Kano Strategic Command has arrested over 904 suspects (869 male, 35 female), seized more than 2.5 tonnes of assorted illicit substances during the period, and secured over 54 convictions. Some offenders have received sentences of up to 15 years — evidence that arrests lead to prosecutions and prosecutions lead to consequences.
While enforcement remains essential, the NDLEA recognises that it cannot win this war alone. The Agency combines robust enforcement with prevention, treatment and community engagement, and calls on all stakeholders to play their part: security agencies must remain relentless; traditional and religious leaders must provide moral guidance; schools must deliver early drug education; employers must create opportunities for youth; and families must be vigilant and supportive. The NDLEA reiterates that trafficking networks will be pursued, proceeds seized and operations dismantled.
Commander Lawal acknowledged the leadership and vision of NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), CON, OFR, and expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government under His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf for decisive policy and operational support, including the swift erosion‑control intervention in Rimin Kebe that denied traffickers safe havens. He also thanked the Federal High Court Judges under Hon. Justice S.M. Shu’aibu for timely judgments, and paid special tribute to the outgoing Director, Operations and General Investigations, DCGN A.S. Ningi, for meritorious service and his ties to Kano.
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, ably represented by the Director of Operations and General Investigations, DCGN Ahmad Sulaiman Ningi, described the public destruction as “justice made visible.”
The Executive Governor of Kano State affirmed that the public destruction demonstrates the State’s firm resolve to deny criminal networks the ability to poison communities. He emphasised that enforcement will be combined with rehabilitation, citing initiatives including visits to Kiru Rehabilitation Centre, the Anti‑Illicit Drugs and Phone Snatching Committee, deployment of marshals to hotspots, and the Safe Corridor Project for youth reintegration. The Governor noted that over 400 youths have been arrested with most reintegrated, while hard dealers face prosecution, and pledged continued intelligence sharing, rehabilitation capacity and logistical support.
DCGN Ningi said the exercise sends a clear message to drug cartels and reflects the NDLEA’s resolve to protect communities through enforcement, supply‑chain oversight, Alternative Development for farmers, and Drug Integrity Testing on campuses. He commended the Kano State Government and partners, and reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to a drug‑free Kano and Nigeria.
The NDLEA Kano Strategic Command will not rest until Kano is free from the grip of illicit drugs. This public destruction is accountability in plain sight and a renewed call for collective action to protect our youth, families and communities.
