The Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, today commemorated the 2026 World Environment Day at the Palace of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Kano, Kofar Kudu, Kano.
The event was officially flagged off by the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, and attended by the Managing Director of REMASAB, Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil, alongside senior government officials, environmental stakeholders, traditional leaders, development partners and members of the public.
The celebration featured a range of environmental sustainability initiatives, including community sanitation exercises, tree-planting activities and the installation of litter bins along strategic locations within the metropolis. These efforts reflect the Kano State Government’s commitment to environmental stewardship, effective waste management and the promotion of a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment for all citizens.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of REMASAB, Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil, highlighted the significant milestones achieved by the Board under the visionary leadership of the Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf. He noted that the administration has successfully cleared inherited liabilities relating to sanitation workers, restored their salaries to full payment status and enrolled them in a comprehensive health insurance scheme, thereby ensuring access to quality healthcare services and medical support.
Dr. Khalil further reaffirmed his commitment to repositioning REMASAB as a modern, efficient and service-oriented environmental management institution through the implementation of innovative policies and sustainable reforms.
He disclosed plans to establish a healthcare facility within the Board to provide prompt medical attention and enhance the welfare of its workforce.
He also expressed profound appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his unwavering support, strategic leadership and continued investment in environmental sanitation and the wellbeing of sanitation workers across Kano State.
The World Environment Day commemoration underscores Kano State’s enduring commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience and community participation in building a cleaner, safer and more prosperous future for present and future generations.
