Ministry for Local Government is taking steps to address critical water quality challenges and reduce water-borne diseases across the State’s 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) using a combination of scientific research and local innovation.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, revealed a comprehensive strategy that leverages advanced water treatment technologies, including precision chlorine dosing machines and natural purification methods.
He made the disclosure during a meeting with the Development Innovation Lab to brief the Ministry on the outcome of the Chlorine Sensitization and Redemption Pilot Project carried out in two LGAs of the State and explore possibilities for expansion, technical support, and sustainability in a statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry Comrade,Aminu Bello Sani and delivered to thetentaclesnews.com.ng
The team, led by Professor Elisa and comprising experts from California, Michigan, Barkley, and Chicago, presented their findings and recommendations for scaling up the initiative to other LGAs.
The Commissioner emphasized that prevention is always better than a cure and directed Local Government Councils to prioritize the provision of portable drinking water across the 44 LGAs.
Mohammed Tajo requested that the project include student exchange programs and training initiatives to build local capacity in water science and technology, creating a skilled workforce of water treatment experts.
Professor Elisa noted that the project employs a scientific approach, with researchers developing adaptable protocols that account for Kano’s varied environmental conditions. Systematic testing across different local government areas ensures comprehensive and reliable water treatment strategies. The meeting also explored potential collaboration in other WASH thematic areas, highlighting the state’s dedication to promoting public health and well-being.
The government is committed to developing proactive solutions that can drastically reduce waterborne diseases and improve public health across the state’s diverse local governments. By building on the successes of this pilot project and working with partners, the aim is to improve access to clean and safer water in the State
