Efforts to recover and manage proceeds of crime in Kano State have taken a significant step forward as stakeholders concluded a three-day retreat to draft the Kano State Proceeds of Crime Bill 2024.

The proposed legislation, which aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework for managing illicit funds, has been described as a game-changer in the fight against corruption and economic crimes in the state.

SolaceBase reports that the retreat, held recently in Kaduna, was organized by the Open Government Partnership (OGP) with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC II) program.

It convened representatives from the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), Kano State House of Assembly, the Ministry of Justice, and other key stakeholders to develop the draft bill.

In a communiqué issued on Wednesday, the Chairman of Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado highlighted the challenges faced due to the absence of a legal framework for crime proceeds.

“The lack of a comprehensive law has cost Kano State significant revenue,” he said. “This bill will provide a robust mechanism to recover these funds and channel them toward public benefit.”

Speaking on behalf of the Open Government Partnership, the Head of Service of Kano State, Abba A. Danguguwa, underscored the importance of the proposed law.
