Kano State Government reaffirms firm commitment to upholding and promoting freedom of the press as the global community commemorates the World Press Freedom Day 2025 today.
This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”, indeed underlines the transformative influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism and the media landscape.

The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has, since its inception, recognized that a free, independent and pluralistic media is a cornerstone of democracy and a catalyst for development. This, therefore, embolden our resolve to consistently promote an enabling environment for journalists and media practitioners to perform their duties effectively and without fear. The recent proliferation of broadcast media, particularly radio, and online news sources in the state may certainly not be unconnected with this tolerant and accommodative disposition of the state government.

It is on record that we maintain open and consistent dialogues between the state government and media leaders, ensuring transparency and mutual understanding while also collaborating with various media groups and associations, providing logistical and moral support to their initiatives and capacity-building efforts.

Additionally, recognizing the evolving media landscape, we supported the formation of the Online Media Chapel in acknowledgment of the pivotal role of digital journalism in contemporary information dissemination.

As we navigate the complexities introduced by AI in journalism, we are committed to ensuring that these technological advancements enhance, rather than hinder, press freedom. AI offers tools that can improve investigative reporting, content creation and fact-checking. However, it also presents challenges, including the proliferation of misinformation, deep fakes and biased content moderation.
In this context, therefore, media practitioners must uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ensuring that information disseminated is accurate, fair and in the public interest.

Ethical conduct is paramount, especially as we confront the dual-edged sword of AI in media.
On this significant day, the Kano State Government salutes the courage, resilience and contributions of journalists within the state and beyond. We look forward to continued partnerships grounded in mutual respect, professionalism and a shared vision of an informed and enlightened society.
