Kano State recorded the highest number of candidates who obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO).
According to the results released by NECO, 74,413 candidates from Kano State met the five-credit benchmark, including English Language and Mathematics. Lagos followed with 72,496 candidates, while Oyo State ranked third with 55,543 candidates.
The result places Kano ahead of other states in terms of the number of candidates meeting that particular five-credit benchmark. Reports also indicate that this is the second consecutive year Kano has recorded the highest number under the same measure.
At the national level, 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 NECO SSCE, while 1,371,992 candidates eventually sat for the examination.
NECO reported that 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent, obtained at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics.
A further 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, obtained at least five credits irrespective of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.
The examination was conducted between 15 June and 23 July 2026, across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as six foreign countries.
Examination Malpractice Declines
NECO also reported a significant decline in examination malpractice.
The number of candidates involved in reported examination malpractice fell from 3,878 in 2025 to 1,406 in 2026, representing a 64.74 per cent reduction.
The NECO Registrar, Professor Dantani Wushishi, attributed the improvement partly to measures adopted to strengthen the integrity of the examination, including the use of computer-based examination systems.
Kano Government’s Education Support
The Kano State Government has also highlighted its financial support for external examinations.
Kano State Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, said the state allocated N4.4 billion in 2026 to sponsor students for NECO, JAMB and NABTEB examinations. Different reports put the number of beneficiaries above 150,000, although one report quoted a figure of more than 183,000. We therefore recommend avoiding a precise beneficiary figure unless the government provides a single verified figure.
The Commissioner also said the state had continued to invest heavily in education, including school renovation, provision of learning materials and recruitment of teachers.
WHAT THE RESULT SHOWS
The NECO figures show that Kano had the largest number of candidates meeting the five-credit benchmark that includes English Language and Mathematics.
However, the figure should be understood specifically within that examination measure. It does not, on its own, provide a complete assessment of the overall quality of education in the state.
A broader assessment would also require consideration of teaching quality, school facilities, teacher availability, enrolment, attendance and students’ performance after secondary education.
