KANO: GOVERNMENT APPROVES UPGRADE OF FIVE PHCs TO GENERAL HOSPITALS
HMB Set to Begin Immediate Takeover and Assessment of the Facilities
The Kano State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the upgrade of five Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to General Hospitals across the State.
The facilities approved for the upgrade are:
1. Garun Malam PHC
2. Kumbotso PHC
3. Ghari PHC
4. Garko PHC
5. Kachako PHC
The landmark decision is in line with the administration’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare delivery system, expanding access to secondary healthcare services, and bringing quality and comprehensive medical care closer to the people, particularly residents in underserved communities.
Following the approval and in accordance with the standing directives, the Executive Secretary, Kano State Hospitals Management Board (HMB), Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, has constituted a team to immediately commence arrangements for the takeover of the five facilities. The team is expected to undertake comprehensive visits to the affected facilities, assess their current status, identify existing infrastructure, human resources, equipment and other requirements, and make all necessary arrangements for their effective transition and takeover as General Hospitals.
The team will also work out the balance of requirements needed to ensure the smooth commencement of operations at the upgraded facilities and promptly revert to the State Government with its findings and recommendations for immediate action. The upgrade is expected to significantly enhance access to secondary healthcare services within the benefiting Local Government Areas, reduce the burden on existing general and specialist hospitals, improve referral pathways, and strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, and the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, expressed their profound appreciation to His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for this visionary and people oriented approval. They described the decision as another important milestone in the ongoing efforts to reposition the State’s healthcare system and ensure that residents have access to timely, affordable and quality healthcare services closer to their communities.
The leadership of the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board also extended their warm appreciation to His Excellency for his foresight, commitment and continued support for the health sector, while assuring that the Board will work diligently to ensure the immediate and effective implementation of the approved upgrade. The people of Garun Malam, Kumbotso, Ghari, Garko and Kachako Local Government Areas are equally appreciative of the State Government for this significant intervention, which is expected to have a far reaching impact on healthcare access and the wellbeing of their communities.
The Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board further prayed for continued wisdom, strength, peace and success for His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, as he continues to serve the people of Kano State.
