The Incorporated Trustees of Kano First Forum have petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, over what the organisation described as public statements allegedly made by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, which it believes could heighten tension and threaten public peace in the state.

In the petition submitted through the Forum’s solicitors, the organisation called for a discreet, impartial and comprehensive investigation into statements allegedly made by Dan Agundi during a press briefing on October 1, 2026, following the participation of the Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, in the Independence Day celebration.

According to the Forum, the press briefing touched on several issues, including the reported use of a horse by the Emir during the celebration, despite an existing directive by the Kano State Government concerning the use of horses.

The Forum said it was particularly concerned by a statement allegedly attributed to Dan Agundi in which he told the people of Kano State to “await their return and await further directives from them.”

Kano First Forum said the statement required careful examination because of the longstanding disagreements surrounding the Kano Emirate.

The organisation argued that statements capable of generating uncertainty or speculation should be handled with caution, particularly in an environment where tensions surrounding traditional institutions remain sensitive.

The Forum stressed that its concern was not about suppressing political expression, traditional views or legitimate criticism, but about the possible consequences of statements made in a delicate environment.

It said the reference to “their return” and “further directives” could leave members of the public speculating about who was expected to return, what such a return would mean and what subsequent directives might entail.

According to the Forum, such uncertainty could unnecessarily create fear, anxiety or tension among residents.

Kano First Forum therefore urged the Kano State Police Command to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged statements, establish their full context and determine whether they constitute any breach of the law or conduct capable of disturbing public peace.

The organisation also called on political, traditional, religious and community leaders across Kano State to exercise restraint in their public communications, particularly when addressing issues connected to the Kano Emirate.

“Whatever differences may exist concerning the Kano Emirate, they must be resolved through the courts and other lawful institutions, rather than through statements that could be interpreted as threats, directives or calls for confrontation,” the Forum stated in the petition.

The Forum said Kano’s importance as a major commercial, social and political centre makes the preservation of peace and public order a matter of concern to millions of residents and people beyond the state.

It urged all stakeholders to place the safety of residents above personal, political or institutional interests.

Kano First Forum said its petition was submitted in the interest of preventing avoidable conflict, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that disagreements surrounding the Kano Emirate are addressed through lawful and peaceful channels.

The petition was addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, with copies forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) for their attention.

The Forum consequently appealed to the security agencies to independently assess the matter and take any lawful steps they consider necessary to preserve peace and prevent any development capable of threatening public order in Kano State.
