The Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has celebrated its first year in office, highlighting a series of achievements aimed at improving members’ welfare, strengthening the chapel’s operations and promoting professionalism in journalism.
Speaking during the anniversary and stewardship presentation held at the NUJ Press Centre in Kano, the Chairman of the Chapel, Alhaji Murtala Adewale, attributed the successes recorded over the past 12 months to teamwork, dedication and the unwavering support of members.
He reaffirmed the executive’s commitment to prioritising members’ welfare, professional development and institutional growth.
“Our responsibility is to remain united and work together in promoting ethical journalism and building greater synergy among media professionals for the progress of the profession and the prosperity of our country,” Adewale said.
Presenting the administration’s scorecard, the chairman disclosed that the executive established a cooperative society with an initial capital base of ₦10 million and facilitated ₦8.5 million in loan facilities for members.
He also listed a ₦2 million medical intervention for a member, Ramadan food support valued at ₦2.5 million, welfare assistance and the securing of an additional ₦30,000 monthly special gesture for members among the key achievements.
Other accomplishments included the provision of unlimited 5G internet service at the chapel, installation of DSTV, improved office sanitation, procurement of an electric kettle for members, reactivation of the chapel’s bank account, creation of a functional Facebook page, regular refreshments for members, a four-day retreat in Kaduna, the institution of Distinguished Awards of Excellence, installation of an Olympic-standard table tennis facility and the facilitation of two Hajj slots for members.
Adewale called on journalists to strengthen unity, professionalism and collaboration to advance the journalism profession and contribute to national peace, progress and development.
Associate Professor Sule Ya’u Sule commended the chapel’s leadership for what he described as an impressive performance within its first year, noting that the administration had demonstrated transparency, accountability and a strong commitment to members’ welfare.
Similarly, a former Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council and National Trustee of the union, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, praised the executive for presenting a documented stewardship report, describing the initiative as a commendable step towards promoting accountability and preserving the chapel’s institutional memory.
The Chairman of the NUJ Online Chapel, Abdulkadir Dangambo, urged journalists to deepen unity and collaboration to strengthen the media profession and enhance its contribution to Nigeria’s development.
Representatives of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim and Abdullateef Sadiq, congratulated the Correspondents’ Chapel on its successful one-year stewardship presentation and encouraged members to sustain the culture of professionalism and accountability.
The event attracted representatives of the Secretary to the Kano State Government, the Head of Service, the Director-General of Media and Publicity to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Professor Kurfi, executives of the NUJ Kano State Council, Online Chapel, Government House Correspondents’ Chapel, Information Chapel, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), former NUJ chairmen, veteran journalists and other media stakeholders.
The ceremony also featured the induction of two new members into the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, providing an opportunity for journalists and stakeholders to reflect on the administration’s achievements and reaffirm their commitment to advancing the chapel and the journalism profession.
