The Kano State Civil Service has commenced the 25th Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) Workshop and Examination for officers seeking promotion to managerial positions.
The programme is aimed at preparing officers on Grade Level 13 and their equivalents for higher responsibilities while assessing their readiness for leadership roles within the service.
Speaking at the opening of the two week capacity building, the Head of Civil Service Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Mai-Mota emphasized the need for public administrators to possess technical competence, integrity, accountability, and a strong understanding of public service values. She noted that the workshop was carefully designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required for effective service delivery.
Mai-Mota praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his commitment to transforming the state civil service through training, retraining, and recruitment of qualified personnel through various training initiatives.
Director-General of ASCON, Dr. Funke Adepoju lauded the Kano State Government for it’s sustained lead in human capacity development stressing that the state has emerged as one of the Nigeria’s leading investors in building competent and future-ready public service
Dr Adepoju described the state’s commitment to training and retraining of civil servants as a long-term investment that would strengthen governance and improve service delivery.
“When a governor deliberately invests in the capacity of civil servants, he is strengthening the engine room of government, a long-term investment in both today’s administration and the future of the state,” she said.
According to her, ASCON’s Kano operations trained 804 officers in the last one year, while 322 officers are currently participating in the ongoing programme, a development, she said, underscores the state’s recognition of capacity building as an integral part of governance
Delivering his keynote remarks during the ASCON Workshop, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to promoting excellence, professionalism, and capacity building within the public service. He emphasized that continuous training and human capital development remain critical to enhancing effective governance, improving service delivery, and equipping public servants with the knowledge and skills required to address emerging challenges.
The governor further noted that his administration will continue to support initiatives that strengthen institutional efficiency, foster innovation, and ensure that government workers are better positioned to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of Kano State.
