The Kano State Head of Civil Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Mai Mota, says the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has placed workers’ welfare and public service reforms at the center of governance, resulting in significant improvements in the lives of civil servants, retirees and job seekers across the state.

She said one of the administration’s major achievements has been addressing the long-standing challenge of unpaid gratuities and death benefits inherited from previous years. Out of the ₦48 billion backlog inherited by the government, ₦32 billion has already been paid, bringing relief to thousands of beneficiaries.

According to the Head of Service, the government has maintained regular salary payments and demonstrated its commitment to workers welfare through the implementation of the ₦71,000 minimum wage, making Kano one of the leading states in the country to adopt the new salary structure.

She disclosed that pensioners have also benefited from the administration’s people-oriented policies, particularly the increase of the minimum pension from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000. The measure she noted has significantly improved the welfare and living conditions of retired public servants.

Hajiya Bilkisu explained that the government has complemented welfare programmes with investments in capacity building, exposing civil servants to modern training in ICT, Artificial Intelligence and public sector administration to prepare them for emerging challenges in governance.

She added that the reintroduction of the ASCON leadership workshop and the continuation of pre-retirement training programmes have strengthened professionalism within the civil service while equipping officers for productive service and dignified retirement.

The Head of Service further revealed that Governor Yusuf’s administration has embarked on massive recruitment exercises across strategic sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, justice and security in order to improve service delivery and address manpower shortages.

She stated that the education sector alone has witnessed the recruitment of thousands of teachers over the last three years, while additional approvals have been granted for more teachers and support staff to strengthen learning outcomes and improve security in schools.

According to her, the administration has also regularized the appointments of long-serving casual workers and converted 9,949 BESDA teachers to permanent and pensionable status, providing greater job security and career opportunities for the affected workers.

Hajiya Bilkisu concluded that the administration’s investments in workers’ welfare, pension reforms, employment generation, labour relations and institutional development have restored confidence in the public service.

She added that initiatives such as Sallah welfare packages for workers, support for labour unions and the hosting of the 47th National Council on Establishment reflect the government determination to build a productive and people-centered civil service in Kano State.
