His Excellency, the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and poverty reduction in the state.

Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Murtala Sule Garo made the pledge at the North-West Governors’ Forum on “Setting the Political Agenda for Reducing Multidimensional Poverty Through Scaled Social Protection Systems and Innovative Financing” held in Kano  on Wednesday.

Delivering the Governor’s welcome address, Garo appreciated the participants for their commitment to the development of the region and the nation.

He said, “We are particularly privileged to host His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, whose presence reflects the Federal Government’s resolve to address poverty, promote inclusive growth, and advance social protection policies that improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians”

Garo observed that multidimensional poverty continues to affect millions of citizens across our region, limiting access to quality education, healthcare services, food security, decent housing, clean water, sanitation, and economic opportunities.

According to him, the challenge requires more than conventional responses; it calls for bold political leadership, innovative financing models, and effective social protection systems capable of reaching those most in need.

He said, “The North-West region is blessed with enormous human and economic potential. Yet, for this potential to translate into shared progress, we must adopt policies that are people-centered, inclusive, and sustainable. We must strengthen safety nets, empower vulnerable households, invest in human capital development, and create economic opportunities that enable citizens to move from dependency to productivity.

He added, “It is an opportunity to forge stronger partnerships, exchange ideas, and build consensus around a regional agenda that places poverty reduction at the center of governance and development.”

Garo further emphasized that Kano State views social protection as more than a welfare intervention.

He stated, “Social protection is an investment in human dignity, social stability, and economic growth. “Through collaborative action and innovative financing mechanisms, we can expand access to essential services, strengthen community capacity, and accelerate progress toward sustainable development.

He called on leaders and stakeholders gathered here today, we have a collective responsibility to ensure that our policies and investments translate into measurable improvements in the lives of our citizens, especially women, children, youth, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.

The forum was attended by  Vice President Kashim Shettima, who served as the Chairman of this Occasion; Governors of the North-West States; the Ambassador of the European Union and Distinguished Members of the Diplomatic Community; Ministers and Heads of Government Agencies; Representatives of Development Partners and International Organizations; Traditional and Religious Leaders; and Captains of Industry;
