Digital revolution hits Radio Kano as Rano Overhauls Station’s Operations
KANO — Radio Kano has recorded significant infrastructural, technological and operational transformation since the assumption of office of its Managing Director, Abubakar Adamu Rano, on December 22, 2023, with the station listing 57 major interventions carried out under the current management.
Among the major achievements is the upgrade of the station’s AM transmitter from 5kW to 15kW, while the FM transmitter was upgraded from 1kW to 2.5kW. The AM station has also been converted to a fully digital broadcasting system, while the FM on-air studio and newsroom were upgraded and standardised. Other interventions include the installation of an FM exciter, expansion and improved cooling of the transmitter room, acquisition of desktop computers and provision of internet facilities.
Speaking to newsmen, Abubakar Adamu Rano, The Managing Director Radio Kano highlighted extensive infrastructural renewal, including repairs to the lighting system, renovation of Radio II FM, IT/Sports Unit and other operational areas, repairs of 10 grounded air conditioners and procurement of eight new ones.
At the Jogana transmission station, a collapsed 24-foot wall was reconstructed, while a 33KVA transformer was provided, including payment of the required connection charges to the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA). Four grounded vehicles and an 18-seater bus were also repaired, alongside the procurement of a mini open vehicle for diesel and other operational needs.
In programming, news gathering and administration, the station established specialised units including the Political Programme Unit, New Media Unit, News and Current Affairs Unit, FM Marketing Unit, IT/Sports Unit and Training Unit, as well as quality assurance, procurement and programme review committees. Management also introduced a new live two-hour weekly discussion programme, upgraded its recording software and strengthened news coverage by posting reporters to ministries across Kano State. The live broadcast of the Friday Jumu’at prayer from the City Central Mosque, which management said had not been covered by the station for about 18 years, was also restored.
According to him, The management facilitated the payment of outstanding allowances owed to casual workers, including arrears of five to six months, converted casual staff payments to electronic transfers and employed additional casual workers. Twenty-three casual workers were subsequently converted to permanent State employees, while security personnel received complete uniforms and security kits.
Speaking during the commissioning of the new digital studio and upgraded transmitter, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya commended the management for the reported transformation, particularly the upgrade of the transmitter from 5kW to 15kW, saying he was pleased with the way the management handled the improvements.
The administration also identified the establishment and strengthening of a training institute for journalists as part of efforts to build professional capacity.

Ibrahim Waiya reiterated that, the interventions represent an ambitious attempt to modernise Radio Kano, improve staff working conditions, strengthen its transmission reach and reposition the station for the demands of digital broadcasting.
“Radio Kano should have been turned to be a training institute for now, because it has really produced number of professionals as well as part of the media and communication” Said Waiya
