WHO BENEFITS FROM FREE EMERGENCY MATERNAL CARE IN NIGERIA?
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has introduced a programme aimed at helping pregnant women access emergency maternal healthcare without the burden of certain medical costs.
The programme, known as Financing Access to Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC), covers important emergency obstetric services, including Caesarean sections, for eligible beneficiaries at approved healthcare facilities.
According to the NHIA, as of August 2026, there were 273 approved healthcare facilities participating in the programme.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare also stated on 14 September 2026 that more than 60,000 women had benefited from free Caesarean sections and other emergency obstetric services through the NHIA programme.
However, important questions remain.
Who qualifies for the free services?
Which services does the government actually cover?
And which hospitals are participating in the programme?
These questions are important because not all CEmONC services in Nigeria are automatically free.
Alfijir News will continue to examine the eligibility requirements, the services covered, the funding arrangements and how the programme is being implemented.
The investigation will then move to Kano State to examine how pregnant women are benefiting from the programme.
