For residents of Tunga in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, rainfall is no longer simply a welcome relief from the heat. It is a source of anxiety.
As soon as dark clouds gather over the community, residents begin to worry about how they will move in and out of their neighbourhood.
The road linking Tunga from Gidan Gajiyayyu to the Bye-Pass has become so bad that rainfall can quickly turn it into a muddy and almost impassable route.
Residents say the situation has made everyday life increasingly difficult. Children going to school, traders taking their goods to market, workers travelling to their places of work and people seeking medical attention all face serious challenges whenever heavy rain falls.
One of the residents, Bello Mustapha said, “Whenever it rains, we become worried because the road becomes very difficult to pass. Vehicles struggle to move, while pedestrians have to walk through mud and water.
Sometimes people are forced to wait until the water recedes before they can leave the area,
Another resident, Ismail Garba said the problem was not only about transportation but also about the dignity and safety of the people living in the community.
“We are not asking for luxury. We only want a road that our children, elderly people, traders and motorists can use without fear, especially during the rainy season,” he said.
For commercial tricycle operators, the poor road has also become a daily challenge. Some residents said transport fares often increase during rainfall because drivers spend more time navigating the difficult portions of the road, while some operators avoid the area altogether.
The residents are therefore appealing to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to come to their rescue by urgently intervening in the condition of the road. They also called on the Gwale Local Government Council and other relevant government authorities to inspect the road and commence construction and drainage works.
For the people of Tunga, a properly constructed road would mean more than easier transportation. It would mean easier access to schools, markets, hospitals and workplaces—and, most importantly, freedom from the fear that comes whenever the rain begins to fall.
