The Kano State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has charged Information Officers across the country to strengthen their professional capacity and deploy modern communication strategies in the fight against misinformation and disinformation.
Waiya gave the charge in Abuja, on Wednesday at the closing ceremony of the 2026 National Professional Capacity-Building workshop organized by the Association of Local Government Information Officers in Nigeria (ALGION).
The Commissioner said the rapidly changing information environment had made the role of Information officers more critical than ever, stressing the need for professionals in the field to remain abreast with the emerging communication technologies and evolving methods of information dissemination.
According to him, the proliferation of misinformation, disinformation and unverified information across social media and other communication platforms present a major challenge that requires professionally trained Information officers to respond with accurate, timely and credible information.
“This is why the present administration of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has continued to prioritize the training and retraining of information officers, with the aim of strengthening their professional capacity and enhancing effective information management and public communication across the State.
“In line with this commitment, I am pleased to announce that, very soon, our Information Officers serving across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) will be proceeding to Kaduna for an intensive training workshop on modern communication strategies. The programme is designed to equip them with contemporary skills, knowledge and tools required to improve their performance and effectively communicate government policies, programmes and achievements to the public” he said.
Waiya described continuous capacity building as an essential investment in institutional development, noting that competent and well-equipped Information officers are indispensable to effective public communication and the promotion of public trust.
He commended Information officers from Kano, Borno, Jigawa, Delta and other parts of the country who participated in the three-day workshop, describing their commitment to professional development as a reflection of their dedication to effective public service
The Commissioner also urged them to use the knowledge and skills acquired at the workshop to improve communication between government and citizens, particularly by ensuring that government policies, programmes and developmental achievements are properly communicated to the public.
Ibrahim Waiya further commended the leadership of ALGION for organizing the workshop, saying the initiative had provided an important national platform for Information Officers to exchange ideas, share experiences and strengthen professional networks.
In his remarks, the National President of the Association of Local Government Information Officers in Nigeria (ALGION), Comrade Jibril Basilla, said the workshop was designed to equip members with contemporary tools and skills in digital communication, crisis management, data-driven reporting, and strategic public enlightenment.
He expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for its continued support to members of the Association, particularly in the area of professional capacity building and the overall welfare and development of information officers in the state.
The workshop featured lectures, presentations and interactive sessions on contemporary issues in public communication, information management and professional practice.
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants in recognition of their successful completion of the training programme.
Participants expressed appreciation to the organizers and facilitators for providing them with an opportunity to broaden their professional knowledge, exchange experiences with colleagues from across the federation and build networks that would enhance their effectiveness in public communication.
