At least five people have died while 10 others were rescued following two separate building collapse incidents recorded in Kano State on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area, according to the Kano State Fire Service.
The Fire Service said its emergency response unit received distress calls at about 2:34 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. respectively, prompting the immediate mobilisation of rescue personnel to the affected locations. The first incident occurred near Salbas Filling Station in Gaida, where an incomplete building measuring approximately 50 by 50 feet collapsed while six workers were reportedly on the site.
Two of the workers, identified as 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar, were rescued alive. Four others—18-year-old Sunusi Surajo, 20-year-old Bashir Ibrahim, 25-year-old Ibrahim Ibrahim and a 30-year-old man identified simply as Abubakar—were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead. All six victims were evacuated to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and subsequently handed over to Inspector Adamu Garba of the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.
The second collapse occurred at Kurna, behind the Primary School in Fagge Local Government Area, where a building housing the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya School collapsed. Nine students were affected in the incident, with eight of them rescued alive. They were identified as Hassana Isah, Usaina Isah, Zulaihat M. Gambo, Nawara Yahaya, Nusaiba Isah, Hasiya Munir, Khadija Isah and Hadiza Haruna, all aged between 12 and 15.
The ninth victim, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was rescued unconscious but was later confirmed dead. The victims were subsequently handed over to the school headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman. The Fire Service said investigations were ongoing to determine the causes of the two separate building collapses.
In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Kano State Fire Service urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to strictly observe safety precautions and comply with approved building standards. The agency particularly warned that extra caution was necessary during the rainy season to reduce the risk of further building collapses and loss of lives.
