The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed its members nationwide to embark on a total and comprehensive strike, effective from midnight of May 1, 2026.
The directive follows the breakdown of negotiations between the unions and the Federal Government over longstanding welfare issues and the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.
The unions disclosed that a high-level meeting held with the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and other key government officials failed to produce a concrete resolution. Although the government reportedly withdrew the controversial 30 percent CONTTA award letter, the unions insisted that no fresh offer or clear timeline for concluding the renegotiation process was presented, prompting their decision to proceed with the strike.
According to the leadership of the JAC, the action is backed by a firm mandate from members who have demanded full implementation of all outstanding agreements. The unions emphasized that partial concessions would not suffice, stressing that only the complete approval of their demands would lead to a suspension of the industrial action.
The strike is expected to cripple administrative and non-academic operations across federal and state universities, as well as inter-university centres. Monitoring teams have already been deployed nationwide to ensure strict compliance, with warnings that any branch found undermining the strike would face severe sanctions.
This latest development adds to the growing tension in Nigeria’s education sector, raising concerns among students and stakeholders about further disruptions to the academic calendar. Observers say the outcome of the standoff will largely depend on how swiftly the Federal Government returns to the negotiation table with concrete proposals.
