The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has seized 7,210 substandard and non-compliant products following nationwide surveillance conducted at 6,233 facilities across Nigeria.
The agency said the exercise was carried out between May and July 2026, covering facilities across all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The seized products included food and water products, medicines and herbal products, medical devices, vaccines and other healthcare products, cosmetics, and chemicals.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during a press briefing, stressing that the agency is intensifying efforts to curb the circulation of counterfeit, substandard and unregistered products in Nigerian markets.
225 COMPLAINTS RECEIVED IN AUGUST
NAFDAC also disclosed that it received 225 complaints from members of the public in August 2026 concerning products suspected to be counterfeit or unsafe.
The agency urged Nigerians to report suspected substandard or counterfeit products directly to NAFDAC rather than relying solely on allegations circulated on social media platforms.
According to the agency, reports from members of the public help investigators identify areas requiring further investigation, collect samples and conduct necessary laboratory tests.
NAFDAC WARNS AGAINST UNVERIFIED SOCIAL MEDIA CLAIMS
Prof. Adeyeye also cautioned Nigerians against treating allegations circulating on social media as proof that a particular food or medicine is counterfeit or harmful.
She stressed that laboratory analysis and proper regulatory investigation must be conducted before such claims can be confirmed.
CONCERNS OVER PALM OIL AND FUFU PROCESSING
NAFDAC also expressed concern over reports of the use of potentially harmful chemicals in the processing of certain food products.
The agency said it had observed cases involving the addition of azo dyes and other potentially harmful substances to palm oil, as well as reports of the use of bleach and other chemicals in the processing of fufu and other food products.
However, NAFDAC explained that unbranded or unregistered palm oil and fufu sold through traditional markets do not fall entirely under the agency’s direct regulatory oversight.
The agency therefore called on state and local government authorities to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts in these areas.
NAFDAC’S MESSAGE TO THE PUBLIC
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to exercise caution when purchasing food, medicines, cosmetics and other regulated products.
The agency also reminded consumers that they can use NAFDAC’s product registration verification system to confirm the authenticity of a product’s NAFDAC registration number before purchasing regulated products.
NAFDAC said it would continue to conduct surveillance, seize non-compliant products, shut down facilities that violate regulatory requirements and prosecute offenders where necessary.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the health and safety of Nigerians by ensuring that only safe, wholesome and quality-regulated products are allowed into the Nigerian market.
