Distinguished stakeholders, esteemed guests, ladies, and gentlemen, I am truly honored to welcome you today to this pivotal engagement for the ‘Kano Against Drug Abuse’ campaign.This initiative represents a vital step forward in our collective efforts to combat the scourge of substance abuse that has infiltrated our beloved community.Together,we aim not only to prevent drug abuse but also to support recovery and raise awareness about the devastating effects it has on individuals, families, and society as a whole.
In Kano,we face a stark reality where drug abuse is not just a statistics; it is a daily challenge that impacts our youth, our families, and our future. This crisis is not confined to any one demographic;it knows no boundaries of age,gender,or social status.We have seen numerous heartbreaking addiction cases that begins with fear, followed by tears and struggles with devastating impact on individuals, families and society but ultimately culminate in triumphant recoveries. It is imperative that we address this challenge collectively, as it affects not just individuals but the very fabric of our communities.
In our effort to curb the menace of substance abuse, the command seizes and destroys large quantities of various drugs with a statistics that highlight the depth of drug trafficking’s grip on our future.In 2023,NDLEA Kano command successfully counseled and rehabilitated 72 patients,consisting 70 males (97.2%) and 2 females(2.8%). In 2024,the number increased to 103 patients all of whom were male,representing 43% increased from 2023.
Similarly,in 2023,the command carried out 65 War Against Drug Abuse(WADA)activities.While in 2024,the number significantly increased to 211 WADA activities, representing a 224%increased from 2023. From January to March 2025, the command conducted 81 WADA activities,marking approximately a 53.55% increased from January to March,2025.
The statistics above demonstrated a significant increase in both patient counseling and WADA activities from 2023 to 2024 which shows that, education and enlightenment is key to prevention,and recovery. It requires a change of the mindsets.
Substance abuse leads to a myriad of social issues, including increased crimne rates, family breakdowns, and economic instability. It places an immense burden on our healthcare system and undermines our collective efforts to foster a safe and thriving environment for all. We must recognize that the fight against substance abuse is not just a personal battle for those struggling with addiction; it is a communal fight that requires our active involvement and unwavering commitment.
To effectively address this issue, we must leverage the power of media to reach a broader audience.Today,we will be discussing a comprehensive media campaign that will utilize várious platforms to disseminate vital information about substance abuse prevention and recovery.The campaign will not be a fleeting moment; it will be a sustained effort that resonates with our community and beyond. Our approach will include Public Service Announcements,Engaging Content Creation,Social Media Graphics and Campaigns,Success Stories,Expert Interviews and Community Engagement through Social Media.
Today,I urge each of you to participate actively in this campaign. Your involvement is crucial,whether you are a community leader, a healthcare provider, an educator, or simply a concerned citizen.Together, we can implement strategies that will make a lasting impact. As we embark on this journey, I want to emphasize the importance of collaboration. No single entity can tackle this issue alone. We need partnerships across various sectors-government, non-profits,businesses, and community organizations. By pooling our resources and expertise, we can create a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of substance abuse and fosters resilience within our communities.
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to each and every oneof you for being here today.Your presence signifles a shared commitment to addressing one of the most pressing issues facing our community-substance abuse. It is truly inspiring to see so many individuals and organizations come together with a common purpose:to protect our youth and promote healthier,drug-free Kano.
Most profoundly, I want to recognize the members of the Technical Working Committee,under the Chairmanship of Ahmad Sa’id Sufi (Chairman Sufaye Investment Limited) who have worked tirelessly, day and night, to ensure the realization of this project.Your passion,teamwork,and relentless pursuit of our shared goals have been the driving force behind this campaign.Together we are making significant progress in our fightagainst substance abuse in Kano.But our work is far from over.
