Distinguished members of the press, ladies and gentlemen, We welcome you to this urgent press conference organized by One Kano Agenda, a civic platform committed to peaceful coexistence, good governance, community vigilance, and collective security across the Kano State.
Today, despite Kano’s proud in the history of peace and hospitality, the state is increasingly confronted with reported insecurity, handful cases of abductions, attacks on residents, and suspicious activities in various communities, particularly Kano North. These challenges not only threaten Kano residents but the broader Northern region because Kano serves as a home and hub for all Northern Nigerians.
Recent credible reports highlight the presence of unknown individuals operating commercial motorcycles (okada) across multiple localities. Many of these individuals do not speak fluent Hausa. This creates fears and suspicion among communities. But we must thank God at this juncture for the decisive and swift action of the government incollaboration with security experts for the banning orders of motorcycles within the Metropolis. It’s worthy also to note and acknowledge the security approaches and the commitment of his Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano state Alh Abba Kabir yusuf, for giving this matter all the needrequires for. Because, the current administration has introduced a ground breaking program the SAFE CORRIDOR which has absorbed over 2035 youths in the first phase, fully profiled them in partnership with security agencies, and willing to engage them in community security, intelligence gathering and neighborhood watch structures. This is the first time in Kano’s history that a government is addressing insecurity through both rehabilitation and enforcement, unlike previous administrations that relied solely on force and political alliances. While authorities are fully committed to verifying these nefarious incursion activities, We urge the residents of the affected areas to be strong and focus:
• To report any suspicious activity or individuals to security agencies immediately.
• To avoid confrontation and rely on formal law enforcement channels. Also
• Remain calm but vigilant at all times for the act of informants.
4. My dear Kano people, Security is a shared responsibility. Therefore, One Kano Agenda calls on:
1. Emirate Councils and Traditional Leaders to Strengthen coordination with district heads, village heads, ward leaders, and other structures to ensure swift information flow to security agencies.
2. Community Members & Civilian Structures must cooperate fully with police, vigilante units, and intelligence frameworks. No suspicious activity should go unreported.
3. Security agencies should intensify patrols, surveillance, and intelligence gathering, particularly in border and transport areas.
Ladies and gentlemen, at this level we have to register a serious concern about some negative coverage from a certain media outlets and political actors politicizing these security challenges for personal gain, whether to sell newspapers, score political points, or attract attention. Let me ask those third columnists what did their publication says about withdrawal of police personnel from Known Flashpoints in connivance with unpatriotic individuals and redeploy them to guard cemetry, leaving vulnerable communities exposed to danger?. This and several other political reasons are the basis, which encourages criminal elements to see Kano as a safe haven. One Kano Agenda warns that reckless politicization of security matters is dangerous and counter -productive. The focus must remain on protecting lives, not advancing personal or political agendas.
Of recent, we acknowledge publicized directives concerning the former governor and a senator by the executive governor of Kano State calling on security agencies to take action on them, we at the One Kano Agenda emphasize for:
• Due process regardless of status or class.
• Security agencies should act professionally, transparently, and in compliance with constitutional provisions.
Finally, in response to the current insecurity, One Kano Agenda is preparing a ” Peace Walk” and “Prayer for Divine intervention” This initiative aims to unite residents, foster community solidarity, and appeal for divine protection over Kano and Northern Nigeria. Details of the event will be communicated shortly insha Allah.
Therefore, we urge all stakeholders, especially media and political actors, to prioritize the safety and well-being of the people above personal gain. Accurate reporting, responsible engagement, and collective vigilance are essential to ensuring lasting peace in Kano the North and our great Nigeria at large. May almighty Allah protect us all.
