A CALL TO DUTY: THE SHURA COUNCIL AN by THE WEIGHT OF KANO’S FUTURE.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

To the Esteemed Members of the Kano State Shura Council,

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Kano  a land of towering Islamic scholarship, cultural depth, and historic leadership now stands at a defining moment. With the recent appointment of the Shura Council, a sacred trust has been placed upon you, one that comes with both honor and immense responsibility. Your selection is not just a recognition of merit, but a test, a test of sincerity, foresight, and unflatering  commitment to the people of this state and to Allah (SWT).

There is no doubt that the membership of the Council consists of individuals who possess the prerequisite qualifications for this noble role. Each of you carries a reputation of dignity, respect, and dedication to the principles that bind our society. You have earned the confidence of many, and now, the hopes of millions rest on your shoulders.

Though the full terms of reference of the Council have not been made public, one may reasonably presume from the high calibre of its members and from the spirit and tone of His Excellency’s inaugural address  that its mandate will touch on matters most vital to the well-being of the people. This move is, without question, a welcome development  one that resonates with the values of consultation (Shura) deeply rooted in our faith and tradition. No sincere person will stand against it.

We must also extend sincere appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for making this thoughtful and commendable decision. The establishment of the Shura Council reflects wisdom, foresight, and a desire to return to consultative governance rooted in both our religious and cultural traditions.

However, we must be honest, this moment is not only about appointments, it is about results. The good people of Kano  resilient yet burdened  are looking forward to visible and meaningful change. They expect leadership that is just, courageous, and connected to the real challenges they face daily.

We implore the Shura Council to focus not only on ceremonial roles, but to engage directly and deeply with the urgent issues affecting the lives of our citizens. These include:

i.Family Law: There is an urgent need to revisit how family systems are supported and protected under the law. Beyond matters of marriage, divorce, and inheritance, we must address the fate of thousands of children, especially the Almajirai, who are forced to migrate from rural communities to urban centres in search of Islamic knowledge. Many of these young souls end up homeless, hungry, and exposed to all forms of exploitation. While we recognise that the Federal Government has established the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children, its presence sadly  is not felt in any tangible way in Kano state. It risks becoming yet another political instrument rather than a genuine platform for reform. Similarly, the increasing number of beggars roaming our streets many of whom are women, children, and the elderly  reflects a deep breakdown in social support systems. This cannot be ignored. A truly just family system must protect the vulnerable and offer pathways to dignity, not just survival.

ii. Education: Strengthening both Islamic and Western education to raise a generation that is knowledgeable, moral, and prepared for the future.

iii. Health: Addressing the dire state of health facilities and access to quality medical care for all, especially the poor and rural communities.

iv. Agriculture: Reviving and supporting the agricultural sector, the economic backbone of our state, through innovation and empowerment of farmers.

v. Socio-Economic Reform: Tackling unemployment, creating opportunities, and restoring hope among our teeming youth.

vi. Regulation of Living Costs: The skyrocketing and unregulated prices of essential goods have become unbearable. It is a painful reality that Kano  once known for affordability now risks being counted among the most expensive cities in Nigeria. The people need urgent intervention to restore fairness and balance in the markets.

These matters touch the soul of the community. They affect not only livelihoods but the very dignity of our people. The Ulama among you, revered for their knowledge and wisdom, are now called to match their scholarship with leadership that heals, uplifts, and unites.

To the Shura Council: You stand at the crossroads of history. The decisions you make will echo for generations. We urge you to rise above personal interest and political influence. Let your deliberations be sincere, your actions courageous, and your legacy righteous.

And in conclusion, we pray:

May Allah (SWT) guide your hearts, strengthen your resolve, protect you from arrogance and misjudgment, and grant you success in this noble duty. May your work be a means of upliftment for Kano, a source of justice for its people, and a legacy honored both on earth and in the Hereafter.

Ameen.

With respect and hope,
