Peace be upon you (Assalamu Alaikum),

Dear Professor Shehu Abdullahi Maaji,

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you. May Allah bless you with this noble position as the Chairman of the Northwest Development Commission.

In my opinion, this position is on par with the one held by Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, during the First Republic. Perhaps, your role may even surpass his, considering the larger population now under your jurisdiction compared to that era.

As your younger brother, this appointment is a source of great pride for us. At the same time, we feel a deep sense of compassion for you. We are proud of you because this position confirms that the path you follow—and have guided us to follow, which is based on religious values—is a path that leads to both worldly and eternal success. Therefore, we have no regrets in standing by you. We sympathize with you because this appointment comes at a very challenging time, where you are likely to face serious difficulties, especially from those who do not have the region’s best interests at heart. But I pray that Allah opens your heart, illuminates your path before and behind you, and shields you with iron against such people.

Dear brother, I have a few suggestions for you:

First, the Northwest is currently in a state of insecurity and unrest. The situation has deteriorated to the point where a traditional ruler (Sarkin Yanka) was abducted and killed in his own domain. I advise you to establish a strong security force that includes personnel and stakeholders from all seven states in the region, to work collectively toward ending this crisis.

Second, I suggest you launch a major agricultural initiative that will unite our states under a common goal of food production. Remember that Ahmadu Bello once had a plan to feed Africa with rice from just Kano and Sokoto. The forests where bandits now hide are actually filled with untapped resources. If we used them properly, they wouldn’t become hiding places for criminals.

Third, establish a department within the Commission dedicated to overseeing mineral resources and underground assets in our region for the benefit of our people. Let me remind you that we possess minerals that can sustain us without relying on petroleum.

Fourth, develop transportation systems that connect our people. It is unfortunate that to board a train from Kano to Sokoto, one must take a complicated route. Why not establish railway lines connecting all our states, so a person can travel from Katsina to Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, or Jigawa by train? This would bring enormous development, create jobs, and reduce the road accidents that constantly claim lives.

Fifth, transform our educational system. The current curriculum is outdated and irrelevant to modern realities. Why not introduce a modern curriculum that aligns with our religion and culture? It’s time to start teaching in the Hausa language. Look at Niger Republic—they have adopted Hausa as an official government language. This indicates a shift where people are embracing their roots. After all, as Malam Aminu Kano said, “Nigeria is one, but everyone should know their father’s house.” Let’s move forward, dear brother.

Sixth, I advise you to be cautious of opportunists—those who seek contracts they cannot execute, then squander the money and seek protection from influential people. I know you as a religious scholar and a man of principle. I don’t believe you will ever be part of any plot to destroy the North.

Finally, I wish you well. I pray that Allah protects you, grants you strength, good health, and a long life so that people will witness the divine gift bestowed upon you.

Your brother,
Barrister Muhammad Sani Yunusa ©®
