The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, has announced the suspension of its Secretary, Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, following allegations of administrative misconduct and financial misappropriation.
The decision was reached during the council’s second congress meeting held on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
The congress resolved that the suspension is to allow for an unhindered investigation by the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, which will probe the allegations and submit its findings.
In a communique signed by Council Chairman Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi and Acting Secretary Hauwa Suleiman Zaharaddeen, the congress also lauded the Kano State Government for its continued efforts in maintaining peace and security.
It specifically lauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for prioritizing security in the 2026 budget and for the recent donation of vehicles and motorcycles to the Nigerian Army to enhance security operations.
The congress called on security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property across the state and urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement for a more secure Kano.
On sports development, the council highlighted the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the Kano Pillars Football Club.
It emphasized the importance of better organization and strategic planning to restore the club’s status as a powerhouse in Nigerian football.
The NUJ also expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for fostering an environment that supports press freedom, allowing journalists to operate without fear or intimidation.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, was commended for establishing the League of Veteran Journalists and strengthening ties with active media practitioners.
Addressing ethical standards in journalism, the congress urged media executives and journalists to uphold professional values, particularly in areas such as translation accuracy and proper pronunciation of names and titles.
The congress further called on journalists to refrain from promoting banditry and criminal activities, emphasizing adherence to the Nigerian Journalists’ Code of Ethics.
It also appealed to the Kano State Fire Service to intensify public sensitization campaigns on fire prevention.
The congress appreciated the Director General of Media and Communications to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, for covering the medical expenses of veteran journalist Mallam Lawan Isah Bagwai and supporting other ailing members of the union.
The council applauded its leadership under Comrade Dederi for organizing a successful Press Week in accordance with the NUJ constitution.
