The Federal Government has deactivated more than 13.5 million social media accounts for publishing offensive content and breaching Nigeria’s Code of Practice for online platforms.

Figures released in the 2024 Compliance Report showed that 13,597,057 accounts were taken down across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). The report also confirmed the removal of 58,909,112 offensive posts and materials.

The report was compiled from submissions by major digital service providers including Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and others, and made public through a joint release by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA, said the enforcement reflects the platforms’ compliance with Nigeria’s digital safety regulations and their own community guidelines.

She explained that the development demonstrates the government’s commitment to safeguarding Nigerians in the digital space, while also ensuring that global platforms operating in the country fulfill their obligations under Nigerian law, including tax compliance.

Umar emphasized that sustaining a safe and trustworthy online environment will require continuous collaboration between regulators, industry players, and civil society.
