The Federal Government has officially launched the Energise Commercialisation initiative, a nationwide programme designed to transform innovative ideas into market-ready products and services.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Kinsley Tochukwu Udeh, said the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to unlocking Nigeria’s innovation potential and driving economic growth through research and development.

He disclosed that dignitaries and global partners are expected to converge on Kano from across Nigeria and beyond, reflecting increasing interest in the country’s innovation ecosystem and the need to connect local talent with international opportunities and partnerships.

According to the minister, while Nigeria is rich in innovative ideas, it has historically struggled to convert them into revenue-generating ventures. He explained that the Energise Commercialisation programme is structured to bridge this gap by supporting innovators in developing viable, market-driven solutions.

Dr. Udeh noted that the initiative will extend beyond its initial technical sessions in the North-West geopolitical zone, with plans to cover other regions of the country. He emphasized that the Federal Government is committed to ensuring broad-based participation and inclusivity.

He revealed that over 1,000 entries have already been received from innovators nationwide, adding that the government is working closely with state governors to boost participation and identify promising ideas at the grassroots level.

Highlighting inclusivity, the minister stressed the programme’s focus on empowering young women by nurturing their innovative ideas and positioning them for success in competitive markets, both locally and internationally.

Describing the initiative as a strategic investment, Dr. Udeh said the government is committed to funding innovation-driven projects capable of generating economic value and stimulating practical research outcomes.

He also pointed to the anticipated role of industry leaders, who are expected to mentor participants and support the commercialisation of research outputs, thereby strengthening the link between academia, innovation, and industry.

Dr. Udeh disclosed that Kano State recorded the highest number of entries, making it a natural choice for the programme’s national launch. He described Kano as Nigeria’s historic commercial hub, noting that its economic significance makes it an ideal host city.

The minister commended the Kano State Government for providing the necessary support, including logistics and an enabling environment for the successful take-off of the programme.

He explained that the initiative aims to build a sustainable platform connecting innovators, investors, and policymakers, adding that contingents from the seven North-West states have already set up pavilions in Kano to showcase a variety of innovative projects.

Dr. Udeh further stated that the programme is a multi-stakeholder effort anchored by the Federal Government, with strong institutional backing at regional and state levels. He added that facilitation committees have been established to oversee implementation and ensure effective coordination.

He emphasized that state governments have been tasked with identifying and nurturing talent at the local government level, ensuring that innovation opportunities reach beyond urban centres. According to him, grassroots inclusion remains key to the success of the initiative and the growth of Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.

Also present at the briefing were the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, and the Kano State ALGON Chairman, Hajiya Saadatu Yushau, who also serves as Chairman of Tudun Wada Local Government Area.
