The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) vehemently condemns the recentdirective issued by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, through his spokesperson SanusiBature Dawakin Tofa.
This directive instructs the Police, the Departmentof Sta te Services(DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) to apprehend, detain, andprosecute any students participating in peaceful demonstrations on the streets of Kano.
This directive follows the widespread rejection and resistance by the people of Kano State to Governor Yusuf’s controversial decision to oust the five Emirs of the state and reinstate theformer deposed emir His Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II.
It is evident that this move is againstthe wishes and interests of the good p cople of Kano State and they reserve the right to expresstheir take.
NANS wishes to remind Govemor Yusuf that this directive is a blatant violation of Chapter 4,Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which guarantees the ri ght ofevery citizen to assemble freely and peacefully.Additionally, this directive contravenes Article11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), which also upholds the rightof citizens to peaceful assembly and demonstration.
The justification given by the governor’s spokesperson, citing fears of a breakdown of law andorder,is baseless and unfounded. The right of citizens to peacefully protest is a fundamental democratic principle that cannot be dismissed by unsubstantiated claims of potential disorder.
NANS firmly believes that this directive is an attempt to stifle dissent and silence the voices ofthe people,which is unacceptable in a democratic society.
