The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) continues to distinguish itself as one of the leading private universities in Kano State and the North-West region of Nigeria.

Its commitment to quality education, academic excellence, modern facilities, discipline, and character development has positioned it as a university of choice for students seeking a world-class educational experience.

What makes MAAUN stand out is not only the beauty and quality of its physical infrastructure, but also the quality of knowledge and training it provides to its students. The university has created a conducive environment where students are encouraged to learn, innovate, develop their talents, and prepare themselves for meaningful contributions to society.

The achievements of MAAUN students speak for themselves. In 2025, a Mass Communication student of the university received recognition at the Campus Journalism Awards held at Transcorp Hilton, demonstrating the strength of the university’s training in communication, journalism, and creative writing. Similarly, MAAUN’s Nursing Sciences students have continued to demonstrate competence and professionalism during their clinical experiences in hospitals and healthcare institutions across the country.

Another major strength of MAAUN is its academic staff. The university has assembled a strong team of academics and professionals who are committed to teaching, research, mentorship, and the overall development of students. Its emphasis on academic integrity, discipline, zero tolerance for corruption and harassment, and respect for human dignity contributes to a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for learning.

Personally, I have experienced the reputation MAAUN is building beyond Kano. Whenever I travel and mention that I am a student of MAAUN, people often immediately express interest and admiration for the university. That kind of recognition does not happen by accident; it is a reflection of the impact the institution is making.

At MAAUN, education goes beyond obtaining a degree. Students are taught their chosen disciplines while also being encouraged to develop good character, discipline, respect for lecturers and colleagues, and a sense of responsibility to society. The university therefore seeks to produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also responsible and morally grounded.

I am particularly proud of the growing recognition MAAUN has received in both national and international higher education assessments. MAAUN and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, were among the 24 Nigerian universities featured in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The inclusion of MAAUN in one of the world’s widely recognised higher education ranking systems reflects the university’s growing visibility and participation in the global higher education landscape.

The 2026 ranking featured 24 Nigerian universities, comprising 17 public and seven private institutions, with the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos and Bayero University, Kano, among Nigeria’s leading representatives.

MAAUN has also earned notable recognition in the AD Scientific Index, another international academic ranking and indexing system that evaluates universities and researchers based on indicators of scientific productivity and scholarly impact. In the 2025 AD Scientific Index, MAAUN was ranked second among Nigerian universities, with Covenant University occupying the first position. This recognition is particularly significant because it highlights the institution’s growing academic and research profile rather than merely its physical infrastructure.

The combination of MAAUN’s appearance in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and its second-place position in the 2025 AD Scientific Index demonstrates that the university’s growth is increasingly being recognised through international academic and research assessment platforms. For a relatively young private university, such recognition represents a significant milestone and an indication of the institution’s ambition to compete beyond the local environment.

In the North-West, MAAUN has continued to establish itself as a formidable centre of higher education. Its presence in Kano has also contributed significantly to the development of the Hotoro community. The university has attracted students, academics, businesses, housing development, and other economic activities, contributing to the transformation and growing prominence of the area.

They say universities build cities, and MAAUN is a clear example of this. Its impact extends beyond the classroom into the social and economic development of Kano State.

As a student of Nursing Sciences at MAAUN, I am proud to identify with an institution that continues to aspire to excellence, earn recognition in national and international academic rankings, and raise the standard of private university education in Kano and the North-West.
