The Kano State Government has commenced the distribution of land allocation documents to more than 2,500 political aides to Kano state governor, including Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), Special Assistants (SAs), Senior Special Reporters (SSRs), Special Reporters (SRs) and Personal Assistants (PAs), as part of efforts to expand home ownership, reduce the housing deficit and promote orderly urban development across the state.
Speaking at the official launch of the distribution at the Government House, Kano, on Saturday, the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Alhaji Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar Garko, said the initiative was designed to encourage beneficiaries to become homeowners rather than land speculators.
He disclosed that over 2,500 political aides benefited from the exercise, describing it as one of the largest land allocation programmes undertaken by the state government for its political appointees.
The commissioner warned beneficiaries against selling the allocated plots or allowing land grabbers to dispossess them, stressing that the allocations were intended to serve as a lifetime investment for them and their families.
“This allocation is a lifeline for you and your families. Do not sell the plots or allow anyone to take them from you. Build houses for your families because this programme is aimed at giving you a permanent asset that will benefit generations to come,” he said.
According to him, the programme is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s broader housing policy aimed at addressing the deficit in land and home ownership in Kano State while encouraging residents to build their own houses.
Garko explained that the government had designed the layouts as complete residential communities with adequate public infrastructure, including mosques, schools, fire service stations and security posts.
He said the provision of the facilities would ensure that beneficiaries live in properly planned neighbourhoods with access to essential social amenities.
The commissioner added that the state government was also modernising land administration through the digital transformation of the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning and the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), making land acquisition more transparent, secure and efficient while protecting land records from manipulation and fraud.
Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the event, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim said the land allocation programme reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of its workforce and expanding access to land ownership among residents.
The SSG said the government has continued to implement people-centred programmes across key sectors since assuming office.
According to him, the administration has constructed new schools and recruited thousands of teachers as part of ongoing efforts to restructure the education sector and improve the quality of teaching and learning across the state.
He added that the government has also constructed new roads and rehabilitated many others in all the 44 local government areas to improve transportation and stimulate economic activities.
On agriculture, the SSG said the administration has continued to support farmers and rural women through various agricultural intervention programmes aimed at boosting food production, improving livelihoods and strengthening the state’s economy.
He further stated that the government is resuscitating water supply channels to improve access to potable water, while also modernising KANGIS and reforming the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning through digital technology to make land acquisition easier, more transparent and more secure.
The SSG said the reforms were part of Governor Yusuf’s determination to modernise public service delivery and accelerate development across Kano State.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, Alhaji Mustapha Hamza Buhari Bakwana, described Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a visionary leader whose administration has consistently fulfilled its promises to the people.
Bakwana said the distribution of land allocations to over 2,500 political aides demonstrates the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of those serving his administration.
He noted that the governor had recently approved and distributed letters of appointment to more than 8,000 newly recruited teachers into the Kano State Civil Service, describing the exercise as another landmark achievement in the administration’s education reform agenda.
The governor’s aide said the administration’s investments in education, road infrastructure, agriculture, water supply, housing and land reforms have continued to attract public support across the state.
He expressed confidence that the achievements recorded by the administration would strengthen public confidence in Governor Yusuf’s leadership and assured those present that the governor would secure a second term in office based on what he described as his outstanding performance and commitment to the development of Kano State.
The event was attended by senior government officials, political appointees and hundreds of beneficiaries, who received their allocation documents amid calls on them to develop the plots and contribute to the state’s vision of expanding home ownership and building well-planned communities
