Kano, Nigeria — The Concerned residents of Kano State have raised questions over the whereabouts of large quantities of illicit drugs routinely seized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the state.
“Despite frequent seizures and arrests, many citizens say they have never witnessed or read reports of public destruction of such substances in Kano”.
In a recent incident, NDLEA operatives in Kano recovered 150 blocks and 3 sacks of cannabis weighing 112 kilograms along Zaria Road.
According to statistics, Similar seizures have been reported in the past, but the absence of public destruction ceremonies has sparked skepticism among residents.
“We hear about seizures almost every week, but nobody knows what happens afterwards. In Lagos, Kaduna, or Abuja, we see NDLEA burning drugs in front of the press and government officials. Why not in Kano?” asked Malam Usman Haruna, a community leader in Gwale.
According to the NDLEA Act, seized drugs are to be preserved as exhibits until cases in court are concluded. Thereafter, the agency is empowered to destroy them, usually through incineration at public events.
Analysts suggest that exhibits from Kano may be transferred to zonal or national facilities for destruction, or that judicial processes may delay disposal. Limited media coverage may also obscure destruction events.
Civil society organizations in Kano are calling for greater transparency. “Transparency in destroying seized drugs is crucial. Without it, the public fears these substances could find their way back into circulation,” said Hajiya Fatima Musa, an anti-drug abuse advocate.
Kano has faced rising concerns over drug abuse among youths. Community leaders argue that visible destruction of seized narcotics would strengthen public trust in NDLEA and reinforce campaigns against drug abuse. Until then, many residents remain skeptical, asking: Where do the seized drugs in Kano really go?
