KANO HEAD OF CIVIL SERVICE
The Kano State Head of Civil Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, has directed all civil servants who have retired from service either by age or length of service to immediately vacate their official positions and hand over all government documents, properties and official responsibilities in their custody.
The directive is contained in Circular No. 10/2026, dated October 6, 2026, issued by the Establishment Directorate of the Office of the Head of Civil Service.
The circular, titled “Unauthorised Continuance in Service After Statutory Retirement by Civil Servants in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of Government — Call for Immediate Handing Over of Official Documents and Properties,” expressed concern over the practice of some retired officers continuing to work or operate in official capacities after attaining the statutory retirement age or period.
According to the circular, such conduct is contrary to the provisions of the Kano State Civil Service Rules and other relevant regulations governing the service, and is therefore considered administratively and legally unacceptable.
The Head of Civil Service consequently directed all affected officers to immediately cease performing official duties and hand over all official documents, government property and responsibilities under their custody to their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
The circular further directed all Accounting Officers, Permanent Secretaries, Chief Executives, and Directors of Administration and Personnel Management to ensure strict and immediate compliance with the directive.
It warned that any officer found aiding, abetting or condoning the continued stay of a retired officer in service would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the Civil Service Rules.
The Office of the Head of Civil Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline, professionalism, accountability and strict adherence to the rules governing the Kano State Civil Service.
The directive takes immediate effect.
