Kano Establishes 7-Man Information Advisory Council; Press Support Fund

In an effort to sanitize media activities and regulate the conduct of political propagandists (Sojojin Baka), the Kano State Government has established an Information Advisory Council.

The State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs,  Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, announced this during an Iftar for journalists event organized in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano Council chapter, held at the Press Center on Thursday.

Waiya explained that the council’s primary mandate is to monitor media programs, press activities, and political commentary while curbing unethical practices by unprofessional writers.

He added that the Information Advisory Council would advise the government on issues related to state development, particularly in media advocacy and public enlightenment.

The committee comprises veteran journalists, including:  Malam Ahmed Aminu (Chairman), other members are Alhaji Muhammad Danyaro, Dr. Farouk Umar Usman,  Auwalu Mua’azu, Aishatu Sule, and NUJ Chairman Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi,

Comrade Waiya also refuted social media reports alleging that he ordered the arrest and detention of two journalists in the state, describing the claims as false and malicious.

He urged journalists to uphold professionalism and adhere to the ethics of journalism. ” I tasked the NUJ Kano Council with implementing mechanisms to identify and discipline unqualified individuals undermining the profession”. Waiya stressed.

The commissioner warned that the government would no longer tolerate actions that tarnish the state’s reputation. He also announced plans to establish a Press Support Fund to assist journalists in education, healthcare, and welfare.

Veteran journalists and former government officials, including Alh. Ahmed Aminu, Alh. Muhammad Danyaro, Dr. Farouk Umar Usman, former Commissioner for Information Alh. Baba Halilu Dantiye, and  former Director Bello Sani Galadanci, expressed their dismay on how some media organisations playing unethical contents and pledged their support for the government’s efforts to restore Kano’s media integrity.

In his remarks, NUJ Kano Council Chairman, Comrade Suleiman A. Dederi, thanked the commissioner for strengthening journalism in the state and assured him of the union’s cooperation.

The Iftar event marked a historic occasion as the first of its kind since the NUJ Kano Council’s establishment. It brought together veteran, active, and retired journalists from government media, private organizations, and new media platforms.
