An Alfijir Labarai Report
In Nigeria, some companies have, over the years, used social and community initiatives to support areas related to children, education and community development.
One of the companies with such programmes is Dufil Prima Foods, the producer of Indomie Instant Noodles in Nigeria. Some of its initiatives have focused particularly on children and education.
But why are such programmes important, especially in a country with a large population of children and young people?
INDOMIE FAN CLUB: ENGAGING CHILDREN THROUGH EDUCATION AND ENTERTAINMENT
One of the programmes established by Indomie is the Indomie Fan Club, launched in 2005 for children between the ages of 4 and 12.
According to information published by the company, the programme has reached more than 100,000 children in different parts of Nigeria, including Lagos, Ogun and Abuja.
The programme combines entertainment with educational activities through competitions, drawing, writing, factory visits, children’s events and other school-related activities.
At different times, the Indomie Fan Club has also worked with the Federal Road Safety Corps to educate children about road safety rules.
This shows that the programme goes beyond the food product itself, using different activities to engage children in education, skills development and awareness.
EDUCATION AND STUDENT SUPPORT
Another important area of Dufil’s activities involving children is educational support.
In 2023, Dufil Prima Foods announced an education support grant of N5 million for 50 indigent students in Lagos State, with each student receiving N100,000 to assist with educational needs.
In 2025, the company also partnered with the Ajose Foundation to provide N5 million in scholarships to indigent students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
These examples indicate that education has remained one of the areas receiving attention within the company’s community support initiatives.
THE 2026 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
In 2026, Indomie also introduced a scholarship programme for Nigerian students who gained admission into public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
According to the programme information, the scholarship is designed to cover tuition fees for the duration of study, subject to the conditions and requirements set by the programme.
This expands the conversation from supporting children at primary and secondary school levels to providing assistance to young people entering tertiary institutions.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
In a country where many families face economic pressures, the cost of education, learning materials and other school-related expenses can become a major challenge.
Support that reduces part of this burden can therefore help students continue their education.
Similarly, programmes that give children opportunities to participate in competitions, writing, drawing and other skills-based activities can provide avenues for them to discover and develop their abilities.
BEYOND THE FOOD PRODUCT
From a business perspective, companies produce goods to meet consumer needs and remain commercially viable.
However, the relationship between a company and the community can extend beyond the products it sells.
When a company invests in programmes involving children, schools and education, an important question arises: what long-term impact can such engagement have on society?
In the case of Indomie, information published by the company highlights activities involving children’s education, competitions, school visits, road-safety awareness and scholarship support.
This suggests that the company’s community initiatives extend beyond the marketing of its food products.
THE FUTURE OF CHILDREN AND NIGERIA
Children and young people are not merely consumers of products.
They are students, entrepreneurs, workers, teachers, professionals and future leaders who will play important roles in Nigeria in the years ahead.
Therefore, initiatives that improve access to education, encourage skills development and provide opportunities for children are directly connected to the country’s future.
This is why corporate programmes involving children and education deserve to be examined beyond the question of product marketing.
BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY: WHAT SHOULD BE EXAMINED?
Community support programmes should not be assessed only by the amount of money spent.
It is also important to examine who benefits, what opportunities are created, how programmes are implemented, and whether their impact extends beyond the immediate event or support provided.
From this perspective, programmes involving children and education are important because they touch directly on the long-term development of society.
CONCLUSION
Indomie has established a number of programmes involving children, education and community support in Nigeria, ranging from the Indomie Fan Club to scholarship programmes and other educational initiatives.
Information published by the company shows that these activities include educational competitions for children, school support, road-safety awareness and financial assistance for students.
Ultimately, the question is not only how much is invested, but also:
What has that investment achieved, and how many children and young people have gained opportunities they might otherwise not have had?
Alfijir Labarai will continue to examine such initiatives in order to understand how business activities and community development intersect in Nigeria.
