As another election season approaches, a familiar political drama is unfolding across our communities. Faces that disappeared immediately after securing victory are suddenly reappearing. Politicians who once became inaccessible are now knocking on our doors, gathering people for football friendly matches, might now start attending weddings, funerals, naming ceremonies, and community gatherings, all in search of another opportunity to return to office.
For years, many citizens struggled to reach those they elected. Phone calls went unanswered, messages sent no replies, letters received no response, and promises made during campaigns were quietly forgotten. The representatives who once pledged to be the voice of the people often became strangers to the very communities that entrusted them with power. Yet, as the next election draws near, the story changes overnight.
The same politicians who were nowhere to be found now present themselves as friends of the people. For some, they suddenly remember forgotten roads, abandoned schools, poor healthcare facilities, unemployment, insecurity, and the daily hardship facing ordinary citizens but my community is still at the receiving end for enjoying those things. Smiles become wider, handshakes become warmer, and promises become more attractive than ever before.
This raises an important question: Where were these representatives when the people needed them most?
True representation is not a seasonal activity. It is not something that begins a few months before an election and disappears immediately after victory. Leadership is a continuous responsibility that demands accountability, accessibility, and genuine commitment to public service.
The people deserve leaders who remain present throughout their tenure not just during campaign periods. Communities should not have to wait until another election before seeing those elected to represent them. As voters, we must move beyond emotional speeches, generous donations, and temporary acts of kindness. We should carefully evaluate every candidate based on their record in office, their accessibility, their performance, and their commitment to the welfare of the people. Democracy flourishes when citizens reward service, integrity, and accountability not empty promises and political theatrics.
This election season, let us ask difficult questions. Let us demand evidence instead of excuses. Let us remember who stood with us during difficult times and who only remembered us when another ballot was needed.
Our votes are not gifts to politicians; they are a trust given by the people. They should only be entrusted to those who have demonstrated that public service is a responsibility not merely a pathway to personal ambition.
The era of disappearing representatives must come to an end. The people deserve leaders who walk with them before, during, and after elections not politicians who only emerge when another opportunity for power appears.
Let us elect wisely.
