The Federal Government has warned Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions against using borrowed lecturers, equipment and other facilities to meet accreditation requirements.
The government said institutions seeking accreditation for academic programmes must demonstrate that they have the required human resources, infrastructure, laboratories, equipment and other facilities available on a permanent and sustainable basis.
The warning is aimed at addressing the practice whereby some institutions allegedly obtain or borrow lecturers, laboratory equipment and other facilities from neighbouring institutions shortly before accreditation exercises in order to meet the required standards.
Under the new approach, institutions are expected to maintain adequate academic staff and functional facilities capable of supporting their programmes beyond the accreditation exercise.
The government stressed that accreditation should reflect the actual capacity of an institution to provide quality education rather than temporary arrangements made solely to satisfy inspection teams.
The policy is particularly important for programmes that require specialised facilities and practical training, including Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, Computing and other science-based disciplines.
Authorities said the move is intended to protect students, improve the quality of university education and ensure that institutions do not obtain approval for programmes they lack the capacity to sustain.
The government further emphasised the need for universities to strengthen their academic workforce, laboratories, libraries, workshops, classrooms and other essential infrastructure before seeking accreditation.
The development is expected to put greater responsibility on university managements to invest in sustainable facilities and qualified personnel rather than relying on temporary arrangements during accreditation exercises.
For students and parents, the policy could provide greater assurance that accredited programmes are backed by the facilities and academic manpower required to deliver quality education.
