The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified its anti-smuggling operations across the country, recording major seizures involving firearms, illicit drugs, contraband goods and endangered wildlife.
Between January and August 2026, the Service intercepted about 603 firearms that were brought into Nigeria illegally. The seized arms and ammunition have been handed over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons as part of efforts to strengthen national security ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Customs generated N88.925 billion in revenue between January and the first week of September 2026. The Command also intercepted smuggled and prohibited goods with a combined Duty Paid Value of about N2.159 billion.
The seizures in Kano and Jigawa included various prohibited and restricted goods, reflecting the Command’s continued efforts to curb smuggling and protect legitimate businesses.
The Command also intercepted 48 endangered wildlife animals along the Daura–Kano axis on August 25, 2026. The animals included chimpanzees, gorillas, bush babies, wild cats, birds and other protected species, while three suspects were reportedly arrested in connection with the alleged trafficking operation.
Meanwhile, the Customs Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, reported the seizure of illicit drugs and controlled substances with an estimated value of N3.95 billion in the South-West. Three suspected smugglers were arrested, while the seized items included cannabis, Tramadol, Codeine-based products and crystal methamphetamine.
The recent operations highlight the growing role of the Nigeria Customs Service not only in revenue collection and trade facilitation, but also in border security, anti-smuggling operations and the protection of public safety.
