The Kano State Government has intensified its campaign against illegal land transactions, arresting two suspects allegedly involved in the unlawful demarcation and sale of government-owned land at the Southern Terminal Layout (Trailer Park) in Gundutse.
The arrests were made during an inspection of the site by the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Hon. Abduljabbar Muhammad Umar Garko, who announced that the government had commenced the demolition of all illegal structures erected on the designated public land.
According to the commissioner, the Southern Terminal Layout was acquired by the Kano State Government more than a decade ago, with full compensation paid to the original landowners. He explained that the layout was specifically developed as a transit terminal for heavy-duty trailers and passenger vehicles travelling to southern parts of the country, with the aim of easing traffic congestion within Kano metropolis.
Hon. Abduljabbar described the activities of illegal land speculators as an act of economic sabotage, likening the situation to previous cases of land encroachment in the Rimin Zakara area.
He warned members of the public against purchasing plots through customary sale agreements, popularly known as Takardar Ciniki da Cinikayya, stressing that such documents have no legal validity in government-designated layouts.
βThis layout is 100 percent government property. It was legally acquired, properly planned and reserved for public infrastructure. We have arrested two suspects at the site today, while demolition of all illegal structures is ongoing. Anyone found engaging in illegal land transactions or destroying public infrastructure will face the full weight of the law,β the commissioner said.
The commissioner also recalled a similar enforcement exercise carried out last week, during which individuals accused of vandalising bridge infrastructure and illegally allocating government land were arrested and subsequently remanded in custody by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The Ministry of Land and Physical Planning advised residents to verify the legal status of any property or land layout with the ministry before purchasing land or making any financial commitments, warning that the government would continue to enforce laws protecting public assets and designated infrastructure
