Breaking: Kano Electoral Commission Reduces Nomination Fees Following Court Order

Kano

– The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has reduced the fees for nomination forms for local government elections, following a court order. The commission announced the reduction at its headquarters in Kano, stating that candidates for the chairmanship will now pay 9 million Naira, while those vying for councillor positions will be charged 4 million Naira.

“We are law-abiding. The new fees are set at 9 million Naira for the chairmanship and vice-chairmanship, while councillors will pay 4 million Naira,” said KANSIEC Chairman, Professor Sani Lawal Malumfashi, during a press briefing on Tuesday.

The fee reduction follows a court ruling in favor of three political parties that had challenged KANSIEC’s initial decision to charge 10 million Naira for chairmanship forms. Despite some Nigerian states charging up to 20 million Naira, Kano’s commission complied with the court’s directive.

Professor Malumfashi also acknowledged the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties to contest in the upcoming elections. “They have realized we are not here to joke. If you win, you improve. It’s a win-win game,” he said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining democratic principles and focusing on pressing issues such as energy, climate change, and the high cost of living.

Malumfashi further urged the media to play a vital role in supporting the electoral process as critical stakeholders.
