The United States has carried out airstrikes against suspected Islamic State (ISIS) militants in parts of Sokoto State, northwest Nigeria, in a rare and significant foreign military operation conducted on Christmas Day.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the development in a post on his Truth Social platform, stating that he had directed the U.S. military to execute what he described as a โpowerful and deadly strikeโ against ISIS terrorists operating in the region. According to him, the operation was aimed at degrading terrorist networks accused of carrying out brutal attacks on civilian communities.
The strikes were reportedly executed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in coordination with Nigerian security authorities. Initial assessments indicated that multiple ISIS-affiliated fighters were neutralised during the operation, while no civilian casualties were officially confirmed.
Residents of Jabo, in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, recounted moments of fear and confusion on Thursday night as loud explosions were heard across the area. Eyewitnesses said an unidentified object believed to be an explosive device fell near the community, triggering panic among locals. Fortunately, no lives were reported lost in the incident.
A resident confirmed that the development occurred suddenly and without warning, while a source familiar with security operations disclosed that the explosions were linked to the commencement of a U.S. counter-terrorism mission targeting locations suspected of harbouring extremist elements.
The operation has generated widespread reactions, as it marks one of the most direct U.S. military engagements on Nigerian soil in recent years. While U.S. officials framed the strikes as a targeted response to terrorism, analysts note that the development raises broader questions around foreign military involvement, civilian safety and the complex security dynamics in Nigeriaโs northwest.
