The Potiskum Correctional Facility — a place meant for transformation and discipline — is now at the center of a shocking scandal that has left the nation stunned.
Disturbing revelations suggest that behind the high walls of confinement, lawlessness has taken over, with sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, and forbidden communication devices operating freely under alleged internal negligence.
An Exclusive Investigation by Alfijir online newspaper revealed that the officer in charge of the facility, is now under intense scrutiny following myriad complaints from within the prison walls.
When contacted, Ibrahim Tafida, identified as In -charge of the Medium Security Custodial Center, Potiskum to react behind the gruesome development, He confidently confirmed that two phones had indeed been discovered—but he firmly denied any rumors of inappropriate relations between the correctional officer and the so-called female inmate (Blessings, Jos) despite confession from the accused to the stakeholders under review.”
He further declared that, officially, they were not authorized to speak on the matter until orders came directly from the top.
In response to these allegations, Assistant Controller General (ACG) Adamu Yahaya, the Zonal Officer overseeing the North-East region from Maiduguri, reportedly stormed the facility for an aggressive on-the-ground investigation .
During the inspection, illicit activities were allegedly uncovered — including male inmates and staff having unauthorized access to female inmates, widespread trafficking and abuse of hard drugs, and mobile phones found in the possession of prisoners, despite strict regulations against such communication devices.
Most disturbing among the claims is that one of the female inmates was discovered to be pregnant, strongly suggesting ongoing sexual exploitation or gross dereliction of duty within the facility.
A Pattern of Silence and Inaction
While these issues are said to be well-known among insiders, they rarely reach the public domain — and when they do, they are often silenced rather than resolved. Despite repeated reports of misconduct, there is little record of decisive disciplinary action being taken.
The situation became too alarming to ignore, as what he reportedly uncovered was nothing short of a nightmare:
Male inmates and staff allegedly gaining unauthorized access to female inmates
Hard drugs circulating like groundnuts
Mobile phones — a severe security breach — found openly in the hands of prisoners
And most shocking of all… a female inmate was discovered to be PREGNANT.
According to the in – person eye witness who pleaded anonymity confirmed that the ACG during the impromptu visit, carried all the on spot uncovered illegal materials nabbed within the facility to the zonal office for more intense scrutiny and investigation.
HOW DID A WOMAN GET PREGNANT INSIDE A SECURED FACILITY?
This single fact alone is enough to indict the entire supervisory structure of the facility. It suggests one of two things — rape and exploitation, or gross misconduct allowed by negligence. Either way, the system has failed.
THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT — IT IS A TREND OF ROT
Such incidents are not unique to Potiskum, Similar atrocities have repeatedly surfaced in Kurmawa Correctional Centre, Kano, yet after public noise dies down, everything returns to business as usual. The scandal quietly swept under the rug. Yet the cycle of exploitation reportedly continues unchecked.
Enough is enough.
A DIRECT CALL TO THE CONTROLLER GENERAL OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICE
The Nigerian public is no longer interested in empty committees or silent cover-ups. The Controller General (CG) must urgently:
Launch a nationwide audit of ALL correctional facilities
Enforce strict gender-protection protocols and surveillance
Deploy undercover intelligence officers to monitor real-time activities
Suspend and prosecute any officer found aiding or ignoring abuse
Introduce body cameras and CCTV monitoring in high-risk zones
Establish an anonymous complaint and whistleblower channel for inmates
PRISONS SHOULD NOT BE BROTHELS OR DRUG DENS
Correctional centres were built to reform, not to destroy lives further. If inmates cannot be safe under government custody, then the entire justice system stands disgraced.
The nation is watching. The world is watching.
Nigeria’s correctional institutions are under the spotlight. Will Potiskum be another scandal forgotten, or the turning point for real reform?
Will the CG rise to the challenge — or will this become another buried scandal?
