For the members of Kano’s All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, known as A.A. Zaura, and Malam Inuwa Ibrahim Waya are familiar names. However, recent political events have overshadowed their once prominent roles. Both men, who were recognized for their dedication to the party and contributions to politics, now seem to have been sidelined by the same party they helped to advance.

Zaura, who contested the Kano Central Senatorial seat in the 2023 general elections under the APC, had long been associated with generosity, philanthropy, and public service. His contributions during the elections were crucial, providing significant financial and logistical support to the party. Yet, despite this, the APC at both the state and national levels seemed to neglect him, diminishing his standing. His exclusion caught the attention of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, who attempted to recruit Zaura to leave the APC and join his camp.

This neglect raises concerns about the party’s treatment of its loyal members. Zaura offered valuable resources in the party’s time of need but was ignored, pointing to a deeper issue where loyalty and contributions are sometimes disregarded in favor of political calculations.

Similarly, Malam Inuwa Ibrahim Waya, once a key gubernatorial aspirant within the APC, met a similar fate. Waya, a respected figure in Kano’s political scene with a background in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), had shown interest in running for governor in 2022 and 2023.

However, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje chose Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, his deputy, as the APC’s gubernatorial candidate. This sidelined Waya, and after careful consideration, he chose not to challenge Gawuna’s nomination. Although he remained silent on the issue, his generosity in supporting the APC’s presidential bid was notable. He donated his campaign office, a 10,000-seat hall, and contributed 50 million Naira to the Gawuna-Garo Campaign Team.

Since the 2023 elections, Waya has been largely absent from political discussions in Kano. His once frequent presence on social media and in radio programs has dwindled, leaving many wondering about his political future. This absence suggests that he may be disillusioned or strategically withdrawing from the scene after being sidelined by the party.

The situations of Zaura and Waya highlight a broader issue within the APC. Both men offered their support during crucial moments but now find themselves overlooked. Their experiences raise questions about loyalty and how the party values those who have invested in its success. The future of these two figures remains uncertain, but their exclusion from the party’s leadership path speaks to concerns about fairness and how political service is rewarded within the APC.
