By Dr Yakubu Muhammad Anas

I as a concerned citizen of Northern Nigeria, write to express the common deep concern and disappointment of every reasonable citizen of this poverty and insecurity striken region over the recent unveiling of the Lagos gold refinery and the proposed $600m lithium plant in Lagos, despite the fact that these resources are predominantly found in Northern Nigeria. I am not against making Lagos greater on and on, but I am concerned over the lopsided economic policies of this administration.

It is unacceptable that the Federal Government is prioritizing the development of every infrastructural and economic development in Lagos, while ignoring the very regions where critical resources are extracted and where agricultural and human resources are and potentially the largest in the country. This is a clear case of sectional interest and a blatant disregard for the economic and security interests of Northern Nigeria.

I am urging the Governors, National Assembly, State Assembly, and members of the Red Chamber, as well as traditional leaders, religious clerics, and wealthy investors of Northern origin, to take swift action to address this injustice.

MY PROPOSALS
1. Mining and Value-Added Processes: We demand that investments by the Federal and State Governments on mining and all value-added processes be situated in locations where these resources are found. This will not only create jobs and stimulate local economies but also ensure that the benefits of our resources are shared equitably among our people.
2. Responsible and Fair Partnerships: We call for responsible and fair partnerships between the government, investors, and local communities. This includes ensuring that contracts are transparent, equitable, and beneficial to the local population.
3. Economic Diversification: We urge our leaders to prioritize economic diversification and invest in industries that will add value to our resources, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth in Northern Nigeria.
4. Security: We demand that our leaders take concrete steps to address the security challenges facing our region, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, which are often fueled by the exploitation of our resources.

ECONOMIC AND SECURITY ADVANTAGES
– Job creation and economic stimulation in Northern Nigeria
– Increased revenue for Northern States and local communities
– Reduced poverty and inequality
– Improved security and stability in the region
– Enhanced economic diversification and competitiveness

I urge you to act now and save Northern Nigeria from economic and security plunders. We deserve a better future, and it is time for our leaders to prioritize our interests.
